    Tell me about C&C

A brilliant review can be found here: RPGnet review: http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11008.phtml

Tom Moldvay passes away (see post #52)

I'm grateful for his many contributions to our hobby (the best version of Basic D&D ever published; classic modules like B4, X1, & X2; his work on Star Frontiers and other games). Sad news indeed. :(

    True20 -- Blood Throne

For the love of God, would either Urizon or Kroh change their avatar?!? ;) 'Blood Throne' looks grand!

Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser's Nehwon and Wilderlands of High Fantasy - Compare?

And of course the Silver Eel tavern!

    The Lich (Origins)

I read somewhere that -- irrespective of other possible sources for the 'lich' -- Gary Gygax based the D&D lich on a character from one of R.E. Howard's Conan stories (most likely Xaltotun from 'The Hour of the Dragon', but Melan might be right in identifying 'Thulsa Doom' as the character).

Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser's Nehwon and Wilderlands of High Fantasy - Compare?

The Wilderlands does have a strong 'Nehwon vibe' (and it would be easy to add to it, if you like!). It also has many other 'vibes' (e.g. Hyboria, Dying Earth, etc.). The City State of the Invincible Overlord bears many striking similarities to Lankhmar.

True 20 vs Castles and Crusades

I agree with everything Turanil said, except for his slight preference -- ceteris paribus, I'm completely neutral between True20 and C&C. Which system I prefer depends entirely on the kind of game I want to run. If you're interested, I've written a review of C&C here...

What do you find most Magical about 3E/3.5 art?

It's been downhill ever since Erol Otus and Dave Trampier stopped illustrating the D&D books. Umm ... what? :\ I'd take 1e illustrations like 'Emirikol the Chaotic' or 'Paladin in Hell' over the static 'poses' that afflicts many 3e books anyday.

Castles & Crusades Atlas or Campaign Map

The setting in question is TLG's 'Erde'. I believe a 3e version of the setting is available for little money from TLG. It was produced a few years ago. I'm also pretty sure that they're working on a C&C version to serve as the game's default setting. I don't own the setting myself, so I...

    [True20] World's Largest Dungeon

Sorry for the nitpick, but this isn't true. All 1st level PCs get to choose 1-2 primes (in addition to those given by their profession), which can distinguish them quite a bit. And of course, spellcasters can have different spells, fighters can choose to specialize in different weapons, etc...

Anyone playing in the CONAN world?

I have to agree with Aus_Snow that this claim strikes me as complete rubbish (or at least in direct conflict with my own experience). Also, given how similar Conan OGL is to d20 D&D, I can't imagine why a player who was interested in Conan and already knew the d20 rules would resist the...

Anyone playing in the CONAN world?

That's funny! You might want to reread the stories by Howard again. I don't recall too many 'magic missiles' and 'cure light wounds' being tossed around. Of course, impressions of what counts as 'Hyborian' vary. But if yours includes 'buffs', 'teleport', and 'wish', you're simpy...

Anyone playing in the CONAN world?

I suspect that you might get considerably more replies on this question over at the Mongoose forum devoted to Conan. I own the core book, and think that they did a very good job in coming up with a set of d20 rules appropriate for Hyboria. The magic system in particular seems well done. The...

GMG's Gazetteer of the Known Realms Questions

Having looked over the Known Realms pdf, I have to say that I'm slightly underwhelmed. There's nothing 'wrong' with it, but I think I definitely prefer the Wilderlands as a truly 'old school' setting.

    RANT: Attacks of Opportunity

Yeah, AoOs aren't that hard to understand. I just think that they help to suck the fun out of the game. I do find it often hard to visualize whether an AoO applies without a battlemat (or something equivalent), especially with larger combats, but that is a completely separate matter from...

Goodman's The Adventure Begins: Any Buzz?

I agree with everything DM_Jeff said. It is a worthwhile book to have. There are a lot of good adventure ideas to be found in it, even if you only use a few of the adventures themselves. That's a pretty good one. If you're running some urban adventures at the beginning, following up with...

    Simple20: Anyone using it?

I like Simple 20, but I'm not using it right now. The availability of great, free games like Simple 20 brings a flicker of warmth to my icy cold heart.
