True20 Fantasy -- 'Blue Rose' book useful?

Thanks for the tip, Turanil. I might check out the Companion (especially if its available as a pdf).

    Well I'm envious. :)

    Moorcock blasts Tolkien

Hey! Where's the Jack Vance love? He belongs in any 'top 5' list of fantasy authors of the 20th century. Certainly well ahead of Moorcock (IMO, etc.). Gene Wolfe ... great writer. Shame on any fan of fantasy/science fiction who has not read his 'New Sun' stories.

True20 Fantasy -- 'Blue Rose' book useful?

I have the True20 core rulebook, and plan to use the system for a fantasy game (somewhat D&D-ish in nature, but with magic less common, and an overall 'grittier' tone). Is there anything in the 'Blue Rose' book that is not included in the True20 corebook, but would be useful for running a...

    Moorcock blasts Tolkien

*sigh* Even when one includes a ';)' in one's post (which you strangely edited out when you quoted me) some people seem remakably eager to misinterpret what is intended as a glib, lighthearted comment with utter gravity. Such are the perils of internet communication. My original comment...

    Moorcock blasts Tolkien

My facts are 'straight'. Tolkien already "told the tale of the sword ‘Stormbringer’" in the Turin story before the Second World War. Indeed, the essential elements were in place before Moorcock was born. The mere fact that Tolkien's many stories regarding the First Age were not published...

Which of these games have you been wanting to play?

It is surprising that neither True20 nor Runequest appear on that list. (This sure isn't RPGnet! ;)) Of the games listed, I'd love to play Buffy/Angel, Conan, and WFRP 2e. I like C&C, but I've already played it (though I'd love to again!).

Is a DM shortage partly to blame?

DMing 3e D&D involves a lot of work -- especially if you're making your own setting, adventures, etc. I've DMed two 3e campaigns in recent years. In both cases, I ran self-made campaigns (although I did adapt a few things from other sources). By the end of the second campaign I realised that...

    True 20: using hit points?

It looks likely that I will be running a True20 session in the near future. :) One thing that I am curious about is how difficult it would be to replace the 'damage save' system with bog-standard D&D-style hit points? I'll use the 'damage save' system for my playtest session, since I'm...

    Moorcock blasts Tolkien

Perhaps Moorcock is simply bitter is that Tolkien already told the tale of the sword ‘Stormbringer’ with greater poetry and evocativeness in the story of Turin from The Silmarillion? ;) I recommend that people read ‘Of Turin Turambar’ in The Silmarillion. It is hard not conclude that the sword...

At what character level do you prefer to start play?

First level. I think Goodman Games has rules for starting at 0-level in DCC35. That sounds even better.

If you were to play a version of pre-3.0 D&D, which would it be?

It is almost two years later and I still prefer the Rules Cyclopedia over the other options (with Basic/Expert close behind)!

I can't help but wonder--how many AD&D 1e players ARE there out there?

Sorry, but this makes absolutely no sense. How do you know that TLG is going to release 'version 2 of C&C'? Do you work for TLG? The Trolls have repeatedly insisted that they have no intention of doing this, so you'll have to forgive me if I take their word over yours. Moreover, I don't...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

It is especially important that you continue to produce excellent games like WFRP and True20. :)

True 20 - Is it really Simpler?

I'd be curious to know whether there are any short pre-made adventures for True20, specifically, adventures that might serve for a 'one-shot' playtest session? I know about the True20 version of the first Freeport module, but that seems a lot more involved and time consuming than what I'm...

What is the best game to capture that old 1E AD&D feel? - Please state why.

Obviously your understanding of 'the 1E feel' is decidedly different from my own. :\

Emmanuel - where is the artist?

It is one of my favourites as well. The hostility towards it has always puzzled me.

I can't help but wonder--how many AD&D 1e players ARE there out there?

Yes, you're right. Of course 4e may not be OGL, but that will not affect 3e and 3.5.

I can't help but wonder--how many AD&D 1e players ARE there out there?

I fall into that category as well. :) If I were to DM, though, I would take the Rules Cyclopedia (Basic/Expert) version of D&D. A free OGL-based version of the Basic/Expert D&D, called 'Basic Fantasy Roleplaying', is available for free here: http://basicfantasy.newcenturycomputers.net/ At...
