"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

OSRIC is designed to enable people to produce for-profit OAD&D compatible material. It is not meant to be a complete game system in its own right, unlike C&C. In any case, given the ease of conversion between C&C and OAD&D, both OSRIC and C&C material could be used for OAD&D and C&C games. I...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

I know many C&C fans. I don't know a single one of them who believes that it will overtake/outsell 3e D&D! Such a belief is clearly absurd. I would not dispute this for a moment. Well, except for the easy compatibility with pre-3e D&D products. ;) However, I would be very interested in...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

*Sigh* The thing is, winsandsword, I'm not relying solely on 'anecdotal evidence'. If you had actually read my most recent posts, you would see that I've referred to claims by someone whose job actually involves tracking sales. If you can't see the difference these two kinds of claims...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

I agree wholeheartedly with this, as well as the rest of the advice you give. Excellent counsel. (And I regret getting so side-tracked in explaining the dubious nature of anecdotal evidence to people.) Great post! :D

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Well, whatever. We all have our own pet theories about the behaviour of people. I certainly never denied that C&C was a 'niche' product! I'm just annoyed at the weak anecdotal evidence that people are appealing to in order to support their perception that nobody is playing C&C.

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

I doubt very much that it would be professionally acceptable for Mr. Mishler to reveal precise data on a public forum like this one. Any claim he makes will probably be no more informative than the one I linked to (viz., that after Goodman Games' DCCs, the C&C products are selling best). Game...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Sorry, but this is getting to be rather sad. The fact of the matter is that it doesn't matter if you know people from all walks of life in the metropolis that is Lexington. Your evidence remains anecdotal, and should be treated as such by yourself and everyone else. No, my 'proof' also...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

I already mentioned James Mishler's claim that C&C is doing well. That's not a "I heard from someone" rumour, since his job involves tracking game sales. From: http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=7596&mforum=trolllordgames#7596 So, on the side of people who think that C&C is doing...

Diaglo cameo in Wilderlands Boxed Set?!?!?!

No, Diaglus should have been Lawful, Neutral, or Chaotic. The whole Good-Evil complication was not part of the god ODD's (1974) schema! Edit: And he should be a 'fighting man', not a 'fighter'!

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

I certainly don't take offense to the fact that C&C is a 'niche game'. It is! :) It just irks me when people claim, based on their own personal experiences in Circleville Ohio or Lexington Kentuky (or wherever), that because nobody they personally know is playing the game it is not a...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Why is it so difficult for you to accept the fact that the 36 gamers you know in Lexington may not be an accurate representation of the worldwide RPG community? I can't believe I have to make this point yet again: your anecdotal evidence is just that -- anecdotal. This should be obvious...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Well, sorry, but I didn't think I was being 'uncivil' in the post that seemed to disturb you. C&C doesn't use 'multipe parallel sets of rules' to resolve these things. It uses the same rule (at least inasmuch as d20 D&D does), namely, roll 1d20 + ability bonus + level (if a class ability) >...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Here's a review of C&C that I wrote: http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/11/11008.phtml In it I compare C&C to 3e D&D, as well as earlier versions of D&D. But if you're not interested in a game that is similar in certain respects to pre-3e D&D (incl. 1e AD&D), then C&C is unlikely to appeal to...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Fair enough. All it shows is that demand turned out to be more than the publisher expected. I wish that James Mishler were here to post in this thread, as he seems to have concrete data showing that C&C products are doing extremely well (second only to Goodman Games' 'Dungeon Crawl Classics'...

    Sell me on HARP

I would say, based on my limited experience with HARP, that it is roughly equivalent to d20 D&D in terms of game prep, complexity of combat system, etc. The differences are elsewhere. If you like detailed 'critical hits', you will prefer the HARP combat system over d20. HARP's magic system is...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Look, the fact of the matter is that the first printing of the C&C PHB sold out, and the second printing of the PHB is selling well enough that a third printing is very likely. In the current RPG market, that's a huge success, your anecdotal evidence notwithstanding. And according to James...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Ummm ... I'm not a 'kid', and was merely conveying my past experience with trancejeremy in the hope of sparing Flexor some grief. If you think that my post violated the forum rules, then by all means feel free to report it to the mods. Otherwise, spare me the patronising attitude. *sigh*...

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Hi John! :) Fair enough! I didn't mean to misrepresent your position. That's an interesting idea. I would definitely consider it (or something like it) for any future C&C campaign. There are also some rules for 'constructing classes' (breaking down the various class abilities into...

What is the best game to capture that old 1E AD&D feel? - Please state why.

While I agree that simply playing 1e AD&D would appear to be the most effective way of achieving the 'feel' of 1e (it seems almost truistic to say so), presumably 1e was not included in the options by the OP for some reason. I'm not sure why -- and leave that to the OP to clarify. (Perhaps it...
