    Unpopular Geek Media Opinions

My extremely unpopular opinion (around here at least) is that Alien is a boring snooze fest along the same lines as other late 70s sci-fi snooze fests (e.g. Close Encounters, 2001, the first Star Trek movie).

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

My brain had certainly come up with a different sense of what they were than what was actually in the OG book.

    D&D 5E (2024) Starter Set 2025 unboxing

Looks amazing ... and amazingly thorough! Even though my children already know how to play D&D, I might just get this to play with them anyway.

That too. But it's also about power dynamics. When creators are new and don't have a lot of clout, they have to listen to the editor/publisher/producer/etc. As the creator becomes more successful, wealthy, and famous, they gain more power and can tell the editors, publishers, and studio execs to...

    Unpopular Geek Media Opinions

It's not that the editors aren't willing to provide advice. It's that the creators aren't willing to listen and are big enough that they don't have to.

What videogames are you playing in 2025?

Viva La Dirt League just posted this earlier today:

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I posted the OG 2e preserving and defiling rules upthread. (Not the revised box set version.) Preserving = default D&D magic-user rules. Defiling = destruction of vegetation plus faster XP / leveling progression.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Aha. I just posted the details from the OG box set above, and as I was writing, I was like, "Huh, that's not really how I remembered it." But I don't own the revised box set, just the original, so .... Anyway, I kinda like the revised version's take on it -- where everyone has to choose at the...

Here are (some of) the details from the 2e Dark Sun Rule Book:

Nope! The AD&D 2e version has elemental-themed specialty priests (earth, air, fire, and water), wizards, druids, rangers, templars, and bards. Defilers and Preservers are types of wizards specifically. In the setting itself, the use of arcane magic is often illegal, and there are rules for...

    SkyNet really is ... here?

Exactly. In fact, I might welcome a SkyNet or Ultron if it meant an end to Big Brother. I have to say, I'd rather live in the Terminator's future than 1984's future.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Thanks. Exactly. I like that emanations are a thing now, and this rejuvenated space feels like it would work best as something that is emanating from the druid themselves, not just a random space where they've plonked down a magical area effect.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I strive to avoid referring to myself as a "fan" of anything. "Fan" is, after all, short for "fanatic", and these days, fans sure are fanatical - usually to the detriment of all.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

My thoughts on the subclasses: Circle of Preservation: This druid isn't a preserver. They aren't "preserving" the land. They're rejuvenating / revitalizing it. This should be called the Circle of Rejuvenation instead. Or something like that. Also, I don't like that it's a cube. That shape feels...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I haven't read the whole thread (it's already at nearly 150 posts!), but I'd like to throw my hat into the ring as another who would prefer some kind of option for other magic users to preserve or defile. I don't want specific druids being the only ones who can preserve, while specific sorcerers...

Geek Confessional Thread 2024 [NOW 2025!]

Real Time with Pause can be nice, but I'm more of a FPS gamer myself, so I prefer that style even in CRPGs. Like with the various Dragon Age games, I pretty much never use the tactical combat stuff. I'll press pause occasionally but mostly I just play out combats hack-n-slash style. Same with...

    SkyNet really is ... here?

Honestly, I'm more concerned about tech billionaires controlling the rest of us through AI-powered surveillance tools (cough Palantir cough) than I am about LLMs becoming sentient and going full-on SkyNet / Ultron and trying to wipe us all out. I mean, c'mon ... what is a palantir? It's...

Geek Confessional Thread 2024 [NOW 2025!]

I can't say I hate the game because I've never played it ... but the turn-based nature is one thing* that is keeping me from playing it. Turn-based combat is annoying enough at the gaming table. I don't want to have to suffer through it when playing a video game as well! *The price is the...
