Making a game with 4e's tactical depth, that's as easy to learn as 5e, would be the holy grail of D&D.

Sure - I prefer the "keep X highest/lowest" version since it doesn't require different dice and doesn't break the curve, but it still has its disadvantages vs. single-die resolution.

They barely care about 5e's rule set - they're only withholding elements that would allow people to easily develop 1DD-compatible content for obvious reasons. They could put up the entirety of the rules from past editions and go "anything called out as Product Identity is a no-no" and call it a day.

Unless Golden Vault is the tie-in.

Disney buying the IP and farming the game out to like, Asmodee or some naughty word might not be the worst outcome.
