    Unearthed Arcana 3.5....where besides Kazaa?

I should qualify this by saying that this is only a percentage of downloaders. Some of them would have paid for it and do represent lost revenue, it is true. The point is that there is no 1-to-1 correlation between lost sales and illegal copies. The relationship is much more murky than that...

    Unearthed Arcana 3.5....where besides Kazaa?

The rest of your argument seems to pivot around this brushing off of "never would have bought it anyway," so I'll address this one. You don't own a $500,000 limited edition luxury car, correct? Now let's say you were able to obtain such a car for free by copying someone else's. Of course...

    Unearthed Arcana 3.5....where besides Kazaa?

You're looking at internet sharing as a utility using old economic models, and by doing so I think you are fundamentally misunderstanding what the internet is. The old model is Produce > Distribute > Consume = profit. In this models producers/distributors and consumers are completely seperate...

I disagree. If a law is unenforceable, the law doesn't serve the people, and people don't serve the law, then it's time to change the law. Laws are not some universal constant. They are created by people to serve people. The only issue now is finding a way to change the law in such a way...

    Breaking the Law

Impossible. Now, if only you had a holocaust cloak and a wheelbarrow... I say do something hairbrained. I'm thinking lousy disguises and fake accents, getting the info by exploiting false pretenses, and duping your follower into helping you without understanding what he's really doing. It...

    Unearthed Arcana 3.5....where besides Kazaa?

There are many valid applications for peer to peer, most of which haven't been taken advantage of yet. It's decentralized distribution of information is actually quite revolutionary. It's one of those simple concepts that has massively broad implications in many fields, but nobody is even...

What is 3.0 & 3.5 missing that previous editions had?

I think it's a matter of player perceptions, and I do see it in the system because the system has rules that establish your expectations. 1e Default: We won't likely survive very long. DM goes easy: Man, we're lucky we all survived. DM goes hard: Aw, we all got killed, but thems the breaks...

    Deep Water and Shoals II

"Aye Mr. Lang, sir. I'll keep hard on top of him." If that is all, Vemuz turns and finds one of the more reliable hands on duty and assigns him to work with the orcs on the fore-rigging. He then locates the captain and approaches him. "Captain, sir, I've set the men to the fore-rigging at...

What is 3.0 & 3.5 missing that previous editions had?

I agree completely, and I also think that there's nothing wrong with preferring either type of setting. Here is your prior post: Here you are clearly claiming that a culturally polyglot setting is superior to a culturally limited one, and are even subtly implying that liking 1e for it's...

How will re-distributing the open content under license make WotC feel that it's a mistake? I have yet to see any conclusive explanation of this. In fact there are numerous counter-examples of harmlessly re-distributed WotC content extant that I have already cited in multiple posts in this thread.

    Unearthed Arcana 3.5....where besides Kazaa?

Henry, the actual crime of downloading on Kazaa is not theft. It is copyright infringement. There is a big difference, and it is very important. The laws work completely, totally, different. Even morally the implications are very different (by which I don't mean to say that copyright...

Are you sure about that? When a song plays on the radio, BMI pays royalties to the copyright holders based on number of plays. The radio stations pay BMI. If I recall correctly, recent law also made it so that streaming internet providers are subject to the same limitations (which shut down...

tattoos, spikes, punk, and goth in D&D images?

I like lots of the stuff coming from d20 publishers. It's mostly the WotC stuff that I've been addressing, really. EDIT: And I mentioned Sardihna and Swekel from WotC as stuff I like, too.

    Unearthed Arcana 3.5....where besides Kazaa?

I agree that if WotC didn't want people to get the material for free, then this wouldn't be allowed under the OGL. It's clear as day (well, in legalese at least) in the OGL and SRD. Any legal language needs to say what it does and expect to be fully used. It needs to be clear and enforcable...

What is 3.0 & 3.5 missing that previous editions had?

That strikes me as a very D&D-centric viewpoint on RPGs. Some games don't care about balance at all. Other games work really well with lots of improv and the rules really fading into the background. It may not be what you like, but these things work well for many people.

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/msrd Theft? http://home.comcast.net/~kenji.baugham Theft? And Mongoose can publish Ultimate Feats and charge for it, but if I publish it from my website for free, it's suddenly theft? Free does not equal theft.

Sorry about that. That happened because of the AT&T sale of it's cable services to Comcast. I fixed it.
