Remember two things: Diplomacy only works when the NPC is interested in talking. Modifiers are the DMs friend. Bottom line, the NPC either doesn't want to talk, or has no reason to believe what the PC is saying, which IIRC can be up to a -15 or -20 penalty.

Alternately, this changeling could have a business or personal relationship with the changeling that has tried to kill them in the past. Some falling out/disagreement leads the new PC to realize that s/he has been wrong about this villainous person and seeks out the PCs to make amends.

Ouch.... I'd be willing to bet that the Hill Giant Chief could solo TPK a party of levels 11-13. Raging, he's going to hit an AC30 character an average of 3 times for 31 points a hit. That's 93 points per round, pretty much guaranteed.

I'm not sure it's an issue... Fire/Air/Water Elementals are of a rather amorphous physique which should allow them to extend and flatten rather than squeeze, and Earth Elementals could just use it's Earth Glide ability.
