D&D 4E Playing 4E without miniatures and the battle grid.

I did a poll on this topic on ENWorld a few months ago. The question I believe was "Do you use miniatures and mats for your 4E game?" with options for all the time, usually, not usually and never. The usually and all the time options totalled about 90-95% of the votes at the time. I can't make...

Time for a new Players Handbook

Isn't that what the Essentials books, Heroes of... and Rules Compendium in particular as equivalents to the PHB, accomplish now?

    "Essentials Only" possible in CB?

Do you guys know if the Essentials character sheet will be available under the CB, i.e. if you'll be able to choose it instead of the standard 4E sheet to print your character once you're done building/upgrading it?

    "Essentials Only" possible in CB?

Hi there. Complete DDI Ignoramus here. Will it be possible to select Essentials Only material when building a character in the CB? :uhoh:

    D&D is just a game...right?

Yes, D&D itself is just a game. But it's a game that is part of a greater picture. For many of us, it is linked to literally decades of good memories, moments spent with good friends and loved ones, occasions we shared together, creativity that poured onto pages upon pages of notes, and with...

    The essential "Essentials"

Yeah, what they said. Basically, if you've played RPGs before, you don't need the Red Box. Then, what you get is: Player: Heroes of the Fallen Lands and Rules Compendium. DM: DM's Kit and Rules Compendium. That's it. Later, you might want to get Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms for more...

    Essentials Character Sheet Online!

This sheet looks clean, and clear. I like the way skills were put under their associated ability scores. Nice.

Older Editions and "Balance" when compared to 3.5

"Game balance" is not the same thing as "rules balance". Rules balance is just one of the many components of actual game as-it-is-being-played balance, which also includes various GM skills, collaboration between the participants of the game, spotlight given to characters and the situations that...

    Becoming a Grognard

Basically, yeah. One day you wake up, check ENWorld, wonder where the heck all these people get their weird ideas from, and suddenly realize "man, I am a grognard, now..."

    Becoming a Grognard

In Napoléon's Army? No. And would they be called "Grognettes"? No. If there was such a thing as a female Grognard, you would call them "Grognarde" with an -s for plural, the difference of pronounciation being that in French, you don't pronounce the "d" of Grognard [gro-nee-ar]. In its female...

    Long Combats are Bad

"Long battles are bad." Depends. Some people like combats to be hard and fast, just like they are in real life or in a movie. Somehow, if the combat slows down to a tactical crawl, that destroys these people's immersion in the game world. Others will love the tactical minutia and consider...

In Your Experience: How Good are GM's?

I've played with many great GMs. No question about it. Most GMs I have played with were at least decent, and I had a good time with the great majority of them. It's not some audition or something: we're here to have fun together, so if the GM makes a mistake here and there, I'm not holding it...

    Becoming a Grognard

Actually, Grognard yes does come "grogner", growl, grumble, in French, but it was originally a joke, a pet name Napoléon gave to the most trusted, rugged soldiers of the Grande Armée who would follow him everywhere, but complained about their standard of living. It was meant as the sort of...

    Do Your Tastes Change?

My tastes change too. I started with AD&D, progressively broadening my horizons via the Dark Eye, Mentzer D&D, then Stormbringer, RuneQuest, Cthulhu, Warhammer FRP, Star Wars, then games like In Nomine Satanis/Magna Veritas, Cyberpunk 2020 etc. The White Wolf games for about a decade. Then...

    So...wut's the deal with NWP?

Well the loyalty and morale part is mostly linked to the notion that PCs will adventure with hirelings and henchment, and how to determine whether they stick around, betray the PCs, flee or whatnot when things get tough. A part of the game which is not fundamental to AD&D2, but arguably is to...

I love D&D but not so much Dungeons, anyone else?

I really like this about the game myself. Now, you can have the exploration phase of the game, where players actually explore the complex, make wrong turns, trigger specific traps at specific crossroads and so on. That's the exploration we are talking about. Or, you can have a broader...

    So...wut's the deal with NWP?

For some players, there is an enormous difference between actually role playing the encounter in character and trying to convince the NPC to join your cause, versus rolling a "Diplomacy" die to find out if he joins you or not. Some people like to emphasize the Player's skill over the...

I love D&D but not so much Dungeons, anyone else?

After having read the links to the Dungeon's Master.com, it's actually a very interesting take on the dungeon. It's a different approach, between a focus on the Encounter part of the adventure, and the Exploration part of the adventure, whether you favor one or the other and when. Indeed, a...

I love D&D but not so much Dungeons, anyone else?

I'm afraid I can't go down that path either. I love good dungeon crawls. They don't have to be dull, static, boring affairs. They are the lifeblood of this game. If I wasn't going down dungeons and fighting dragons down there, I would just end up playing another fantasy game.
