Dark Heresy: running a campaign without money

A good point in theory, but the resources available do not look deep enough to support that concept in a long-term campaign. In my other games, money is essential for day-to-day living standards, for fending off penalties inflicted by the environment and combat, to purchase training in order to...

Dark Heresy: running a campaign without money

So, I'm looking at Dark Heresy 2e for a campaign down the road; I figure my players will go for a lighter system, and you cannot beat 40k as a setting. The thing is, money is not a factor in the game, which makes sense, because I can't imagine Eisenhorn collecting receipts and worrying about a...

    Creating better factions

Pick RL factions, and file off the serial numbers. In a long-term zombie campaign I ran, I created a 'save the zombie' organization based entirely on PETA, right down to tactics, personalities, and (slightly adjusted) slogans. It was a breeze to put together (mostly just cut & paste, and a...

Combating My Own Boredom as a Player

I only GM. And I never use systems that lack detailed and varied tactical options. But being stuck running one PC just isn't interesting. TBH, my PS5 fills my gamer needs completely. My dream is AI players. :) Addressing the core issue, though, besides employing crunchier systems, which...

What does it take for an RPG to die?

Hard to say. A lot of games never really establish much of a base; there's a vast difference, as we all know, between buying and playing (the two are almost separate hobbies). Petal Throne has been mentioned, and I know of several online and FtF groups still playing it. I know of groups still...

Effects of tariffs on game sales (e.g. US/Canada shipments) (No Politics!)

Actually, corps hate paying tariffs. Tariffs that give them an edge, on the other hand, they love. As to the voters, last November proves that isn't true. Time will tell. Games stores have been dying for decades. They are in fact, doomed. Kohler has numerous US plants in operation. Actually...

Effects of tariffs on game sales (e.g. US/Canada shipments) (No Politics!)

There's the million-dollar question: will the added jobs and revenue from boosted domestic production offset the market dislocation caused by the tariffs? However, if, as I noted in an earlier post, if oil and automakers benefit, 2026 will be seriously impacted.

Effects of tariffs on game sales (e.g. US/Canada shipments) (No Politics!)

The US-Canadian trade amounts to a trillion dollars, +/-, and the bulk of it is in fossil fuel and auto parts & assembly. Nudge Canadian costs up with a tariff could lead to US production increasing, which would be very popular with both voters, unions, and the big corps. Most especially the...

Effects of tariffs on game sales (e.g. US/Canada shipments) (No Politics!)

Inflation has been running wild for the last four years. There's a lot of leeway in play. Game stores are not a very big demographic, and brick&mortar is likely a doomed business model anyway. And there's an interesting point. Kohler's factories in Mexico have been dogged by quality control...

Effects of tariffs on game sales (e.g. US/Canada shipments) (No Politics!)

Good point. But we're still talking small sums.

Effects of tariffs on game sales (e.g. US/Canada shipments) (No Politics!)

Why? it looks like the most widely used RPGs are owned by US companies.

Effects of tariffs on game sales (e.g. US/Canada shipments) (No Politics!)

Making do, you mean. Well, if you can't afford 25%, that's the option, I guess.

Effects of tariffs on game sales (e.g. US/Canada shipments) (No Politics!)

Why? PDFs are unaffected, and while I'm no fan of D&D, Pathfinder, or Canadians, its hard to see why gamers would abandon the hobby because of a tariff. You guys have faced tariffs before.

Effects of tariffs on game sales (e.g. US/Canada shipments) (No Politics!)

I'm just passing on what I have heard. Keep in mind that the only sense it has to make is in terms of voter approval, and those numbers are definitely positive, at least for now. Like I said, I know zip about Canadian politics.

Effects of tariffs on game sales (e.g. US/Canada shipments) (No Politics!)

To approach this from a different angle, the word within the party (I am a long-serving campaign worker, manager, and PAC-server) is that as far as Canada is concerned, the tariff is a leverage chip, probably for greater border cooperation in terms of fentanyl and illegals. I have also heard...

What is Amazon’s beef with DCC?

    A much better choice. (y)

Legacy of Kain Is Getting a TTRPG

Borg systems are awful, but his settings, while crude and done in broad strokes, are compelling. I will likely use the Pirate setting (concept) in the future, with the obvious changes.

What is Amazon’s beef with DCC?

Man, this can be misinterpreted so many ways.... Especially when made by a masked guy. :D I would stay out of it. Amazon hedges its bets.

ENnies To Ban Generative AI From 2025

I fully support the use of AI, and eagerly await its improvements to the hobby.

How do you define character "weakness?"

I cant really that's a point I consider. I use systems that, at least IMO, require a considerable player input, so the result is solely the concern of the player. Players being over-powered is an issue with me, which is one of many reasons I don't play D&D.
