Going to GenCon Indy for the first time

Can't remember where it said, but there was an option for a long stay-over between flights, which I'll take as and when I book it. I'm holding off for a while - I need to get myself a credit card to put all of this on as I'm fairly sure you can't book a £700 flight on a Maestro card! Here's...

Going to GenCon Indy for the first time

When I said one-stop, I meant with one change of flight during the journey, rather than a straight London - Indianapolis flight. Right, off to go get registered at the GenCon site.

    Adventures in the Eastern Provinces

New Jester story hour! How did I miss this before? Great stuff as usual - I love your players. Just goes to show that not all D&D is about valorous Knights & Paladins; there's plenty of room for the ale'n'whores school of adventuring too. I caught that one of your wererats is called Dranko...

Going to GenCon Indy for the first time

Heh, good advice. With Mark inviting me to GenCon parties I'm not sure I'm going to get to do much else! :D The comment about booking a hotel attached to the convention centre is also very welcome. I'm not going to be hiring a car or anything like that so I'll need to be able to walk in each...

Going to GenCon Indy for the first time

Just found a flight for £625 from Heathrow to Indianapolis, 1 stop. Not bad.

Going to GenCon Indy for the first time

Thanks for all the responses! The first part of the plan came together today - I successfully booked the time off work. :) I'm also putting money aside each month to help pay for all this, although judging by some of those estimates I may need to put a bit more. I've booked the 3rd to the 10th...

From the ashes will rise a new Hivemind.

That's terrifying! I recommend Avatar, so long as you know exactly what you're getting into. Don't expect ground-breaking plot or deep, subtle acting, do expect jaw-dropping visuals and fun action.

Going to GenCon Indy for the first time

I'm looking for some help on organising myself to go to GenCon Indy this year, from the UK. I've got the dates from the website, and obviously my first step is to see if I can get time off from work, but after that... what's the lessons learned from the ENWorld community? I'd like...

    Perform (Stand-Up Comedy)

I think that's my first-ever moderator admonishment. My apologies. If I still had the list of jokes from Piratecat's game I'd post that. My favourite, thought was this: What noise does a Dwarven God make when falling down the stairs? CLANGEDDIN, Clangeddin, clangeddin...

Well, this isn't a post, so the drought continues.

    Is there a social obligation?

I'd tend to agree - D&D specifically is a group game with an implicit understanding that everyone needs to contribute. If someone was deliberately making poor decisions and taking nonsensical choices for their character ("My Wizard will be taking Weapon Expertise: Axe for his next feat!") then...

    declaring actions

We don't have a declaration phase in our 4e game, but we do have an absolute moratorium on talking tactics at the table between turns. Anything longer than "Argh! I need healing!" or "Kill the wizard NOW!" is forbidden. Works a treat for keeping combats chaotic and disorganised, and provides...

Gaming Experience Does Not Equal Gaming Skill

I recently had a couple of experiences with some clearly experienced gamers. One was at a UK convention, and of the five players round the table one was clearly suffering with a heavy cold and actually dozed off at one point (she apologised), one was a good friend, one was an excellent player...

I'm back at work today after the snow, which isn't to say it's stopped snowing at home. Getting home may be...interesting.

    Perform (Stand-Up Comedy)

Three women walk into a bar and say "Hurrah! We've successfully conquered a male-dominated joke!" (c) Bill Bailey So this man comes into a pub with a dog, and he says "This is Butch the Wonder Dog, and he can do anything." The other patrons are unimpressed. So the man says to Butch "What's...

    Perform (Stand-Up Comedy)

Best worst joke ever. Try this: There are two friends, John and Sanfran. They are good friends, but they die, and John goes to Heaven and Sanfran goes to Hell. Such is life (and death). After a few weeks, John asks permission of God to ring his old friend Sanfran and see how he's doing. God...

    Raiding vs. tabletopping

My friend Sean, who used to post in here as Khynal, told me about this. He agreed it made a massive difference to how much he enjoyed the game and that it had really reignited the fun of playing WoW for him. I've never actually played it, but I'm tempted all the time.
