If I recall correctly, Rend is usually calculated as double the claw damage and 1.5 x the strength modifier (so something that does 1d6+2 with a claw would do Rend damage of 2d6+3). I agree. They don't seem alien enough to be aberrations. - Devon

I have several medium-sized creatures with reaches of 10 and even 15 feet. I'd be willing to allow it a 40-foot reach or so, as long as it's justified (which it seems to be). If you want to limit its slam as you suggested, that would certainly make combat more interesting. - Devon
