A worry about "special case monster abilities"

You're overstating this. The maneuver is kind of a cliche, so writers in more recent years (decades) have tended to subvert it. But it also works fairly frequently. Additionally, it is frequently a tactic of protagonists, who naturally suffer a much lower sniper death rate.

A worry about "special case monster abilities"

Right, it's a butt-standard action movie stunt. 95% of the time I am on the DM fiat side of these discussions, but using unique powers this way, when there's not some obvious anatomical or magical mechanism involved ("wrist muscles." come on), is just a recipe for strife at the table. Of...

    E6: The Game Inside D&D

The rule on Disguise is, of course, an epic skill use, as the thick coating of fail plastered over it should clearly denote. Epic rogues walk among us.

A worry about "special case monster abilities"

The problem with the human shield business is that you have to go to these kinds of lengths to justify it as bugbear-strangler-only, whereas, for example, if the human shield was something that a slimy abberation-type monster employed by gluing its opponent to its body with an attack, then it's...

    Your Personal "3.75"

The main thing I'd want to do in a "3.75" is chop up the monster generation rules so it's easier to build quick-and-dirty monsters 4e style without building them level by level, hit die by hit die, feat by feat; but I'd actually want to see the final 4e implementation of this before trying to...

Yeah that would be my beef. :) That and they don't roll.

    D&D 4E Why I'm "Meh" About 4E

I'm not really that thrilled with the new races in 4e: I'm not gonna use dragonborn, I'm not sure I'll be able to make tieflings alien and scary like the heirs of a fallen tainted evil empire ought to be, and I'm kind of suspicious of eladrin, which haven't really been discussed much besides the...

    d12, the LEAST used die

Nononono, use the d12 to replace the accursed, horrible, wretched abomination that is the – I can barely speak its name – the * ugh * d4.

DMG & MM: Players Stay Out?

Personally I think the playing-rules-blind and the co-DMing approaches have very different virtues and it's a good idea for people to try both if they can. That said, I tend to, by default, believe that the players have read the DMG and Monster Manuals, but it's usually gauche if they whip 'em...

D&D 4E So anyone want to see some generic 1st level slimes in 4E?

If you ask me, ooze concepts haven't been really creatively exploited much since 1st edition... the game could use some new ones, especially at the starting levels. I am so jealous of the gelatinous cube familiar.

    D&D 4E Less hit points in 4e?

I tend to imagine they're making fights longer, in terms of rounds played, and not so much the 2-or-3-round all-out lethality-fests that 3E's known for. So, less damage, a little more like mid-high level fights in earlier editions that way. That's fine with me.

How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Love Standard Plusses

That is really encouraging actually. I'd certainly be happy with a few good sidebars for changing the flavor of the game if I wanted.

New article Design and Development Article on Magic Item Slots

Brap. I was also hoping for a flat limit on the number of equippable magic items. Five would have been fine. Then just use common sense to deal with the "slot" business, and maybe split it up into 2 major/ 3 minor. I bear +1 swords and magic-rings-that-only-the-powerful-can-unlock no particular...

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

Why does this always come up in these discussions? It's the easiest thing to work around: "Oh dear. My PCs have no magic weapons, and they've come up against something that requires a +1 or better weapon to hit. Whatever shall I do? I know! Perhaps I will simply ignore that requirement. Yay...

Should he recognize a rust monster? (Savage Tide Mild Spoiler)

Eh, but there's endless varieties of big creatures in D&D worlds and presumably much much less accessible documentation... it all depends on rarity, really, and that's why I agree that DC 10+HD is a stupid, stupid, stupid abstraction. I would lean towards providing some sort of contextual...

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

But unless you actually have a world-spanning campaign setting that point is neither here nor there – it's fairly difficult in a campaign to span an area much larger than Europe anyway, except for Jaunts To Exotic Foreign Lands some of which may have Mystical Technology which can just underscore...
