Yep, Epicville was horrible and won't ever exist in any game I run. Not that my games will ever venture to Argonessen anyway, but in the very unlikely case that my players decide to venture there and somehow survive, they won't find that city as it is written in the book.

Totally agree with your post, but it can be difficult to have a campaign long guide in the party. I tend to like to put the burden on the party to develop their own contacts and have them reach out to the contacts in times of need. Same result, but by making the PCs work to get the information...

Yep. Let the guy waste the guards, let the PCs know they got the guards killed, then let them go do more appropriate things for a few levels. If they persist, then have at them with all the villain can do. Maybe the dice will go wild and let the party win.
