What's the logic for making it more likely that they would penetrate armor (ie. bonus to hit)? Making them less likely to penetrate armor but do more damage makes more sense to me.

With care at picking spells, a Sorceror can be quite flexible... look at spells like Shadow Conjuration, Shadow Evocation, and Shades. Hmm, all illusion spells at that... I'm beginning to see a concept here.

Best guess on Book for my part is that he was some sort of Alliance Military sort, hero or officer or some such... That way Mal has to deal with the fact that he likes this guy, despite the fact that he used to be the enemy. Make Mal confront the fact that even the Alliance can change.
