How much time do your players spend making magic?

I have a Bard-Wizard who spends quite a lot of time scribing up new spells, and making magic items, both to order, and for himself and his bodyguard. The reason is twofold. Firstly I don't generally force the pace. Events happen, and I have an idea of when they will happen. But I don't push the...

    Armor bonus question (Stacking Rules)

The Amulet echoes the original barkskin spell, and grants an enhancement bonus to natural armour. So treat it exactly as you would the enhancement bonus to armour, and the two are additive, i.e. your character's natural armour is now +5. As I recall, this is a chnage in 3.5 from 3.

    Level 20 commoners?

Just interceding here, I don't think that the DMG really spells out what constitutes a challenge. It has advice for defeating monsters (and traps) but it still leaves it in the DM's court as to what constitutes a challenge. If he wants to award XP for skill usage, that's his prerogative. More...

Bolts, Open Lock and Thief Tools

I would suggest that a Bolt is a Lock, at least so far as a game like D&D is concerned. I think it would be a mistake to restrict the skill to those things that we now colloquially refer to as locks, i.e. those locks opened by keys. In this I agree with argo - you would be unfairly restricting...

Ghost-touch alchemical substance, where is it?

    Also in Libris Mortis, pp73-74.

    Why I Don't Like 3.5 Damage Resistance

Once upon a time, the only meaningful differentiation of D&D weapons was the '+''ness of it (or lack thereof). so, of course, we placed great store on having as big a plus weapon as possible. In D&D3.5 it now really means something to have weapons made of different materials, as well as having...

Question about Magic Ratings from UA

Well I just wabted to say that you're nt alone in wanting to know how the UA variant plays out. I am planning to give it a try out nexy month, for a 4th level Bard / 6th level Wizard. At this level, it's becoming clear that the character is - power-wise - very suboptimal. Per UA's suggestion he...

    "Pokemount" abuses?

Yeah, shove him in the bottom of a 5-foot wide, 15-foot deep oubliette, and then see how much good summoning his mount does him! :D I suppose if he can avoid being trampled, he could always eat it to survive!

    Keeping powerful characters dead

I should also add that necrotic termination is a 9th level spell. But I can imagine a sort of NPC necromancer who experiments using the necrotic cyst spells. Sell the BBEG to him as 'experimental material'! :D Okay, probably not a very good thing! But terribly efficient.

3.0 vs 3.5 Spell Comparison List?

Take a look at Steven Cooper's site: http://www.users.bigpond.com/steven_cooper/dnd/Dnd-Revised.htm This is a comprehensive listing of all the changes. Invaluable as a reminder!

    Keeping powerful characters dead

An additional approach, courtesy of the Libris Mortis: Kill him using a necrotic cyst. Implant the cyst using Necrotic cyst then kill him with Necrotic termination. The cyst devours the BBEG's soul, meaning it cannot be brought back, even by wish or miracle. The downside is all the necrotic...

how do you make your overland maps?

Me? I use Serif DrawPlus, occasionally with PaintShop Pro, and perhaps with a scanner to drop in hand-drawn elements. I don't use maps as artwork - I use them as tools to help me run a game! I don't even really like CC2 maps: they tend to end up too 'busy' to be useful.

What do you think of Libris Mortis (Undead 3.5 DND book)?

Having only recently bought this book, it's fresh in my mind. And I must say, it's one of the few books from WotC recently that I've found myself re-reading. It manages to be both authoratative whilst avoiding being dry. And as Undead find their way into almost all D&D campaigns it's a useful...

    Vampire Half-Celestial Half-Infernal Half-Dragon Wererattigerbearboar Merfolk

I have to agree, Ryan. I got a whole and very different perspective when I first played a 3.X game from just DMing them. If nothing else you realise just how much you need to manage your players' expectations; mismatched expectations - throughout the game - are a sure source of rancor and confusion.

    In-game concept of spell levels?

Well, I shouldn't claim credit. The Shattered World is a novel by Michael Reaves. It has some D&D influence in that the different grades all have their own titles (so a Tenth Order spellcaster is a Sorcerer, whilst a Ninth is an Enchanter). Good book, and worth the read. Oh, and for myself, I...

    How do you pronounce "Drow"?

Well, in fairness to the DM, 'Orrible-anus' was what we, the players, came up with when the DM choked on saying the name out loud. He'd assembled the name (from Latin, obviously) on paper but never said it out loud. I think we settled on 'or-OCK-bal-AYN-us' later on. But we could always 'hear'...

    In-game concept of spell levels?

I'll add too that I use the Circle concept, applied to spell levels. That way the terminology is self-referring. A Wizard of the Third Circle can cast spells of the Third Circle, and if Third Circle spells are comprehensible and castable by you, you are a Third Circle caster. Indeed in my...

Tell me about Vampires (or lack of vampires) in Your World

In my Shattered World campaign, Vampires serve as one of the disturbing races who have forged compacts with the Lords of Undeath, the mysterious masters who reap the souls of the dead. As such, they are possible without the intervention of another vampire, generally as a bargained state for a...

    Humans and Multiclassing, Opinions?

I like the Conan d20 idea for Favoured Class, but doesn't it turn on its head the effect of Favoured Class has? What I mean is: in the rules as written, Favoured Class encourages a PC to dabble in that bclass, gaining a level or two without messing up advancement in another class. The Conan...
