Putting me out of my misery ...

Just a little extra note on the English spelling of judg[e]ment: I used to work in the English courts, and it took me a while to get used to the fact that a Judge exercises his judgement to consider the facts, and then issues a judgment! The only place you know find judgement spelled without...

    Craft-Perform-Profession Question

Abusive DMs? Oh, I've heard horror stories of DMs that decide only after character creation that certain skills aren't adequate to fulfil a role. Just look at the example at the start of this discussion where we have Craft (cooking) and Profession (chef). There's a certain sort of DM that...

    Craft-Perform-Profession Question

Scharlata, I think this thread quite clearly that people do have a hard time distinguishing Craft and Profession! For myself, the preferred method is simply to roll up Craft and Profession into a new skill Artisan, so there's no doubt about what it's under. (For reference, use whichever bonus...

    Demon Lords. You use 'em?

My newest campaign - Talyr - is going to be the very first to ever use these quintissential BBEGs. Before I have laways avoided them. Partly this was because they were always statted up in places my players could easily see them, so they would lack the mystery that I wanted to evoke. Partly it...

Half-Dragons. Do you used them? (And WotC's half-breed fetish)

I have Hong to thank for making me sit down and think about the role of Templates in a D&D game. The important thing to remember is that this is a magical - a fantastical - world. As such, the weird and the wonderful do crop up. And we don't have to apply our real-world genetics to account for...

    Racial Epithets

I will add that something similar to this has cropped up my current campaign. The Elves have traditionally seen themselves as superior, so they unthinkingly slur other races. Most have already been suggested, but I have liked the use of Monkey or Monkeyboy to describe Humans! :)

    Silly Monsters

That's what a Charisma 30 means! Even mindless oozes are swayed by your smooth words!

    Smashing Ioun Stones

Well, you ee it works like this... Buy one of those windup mobiles that you can get for a baby's cot. Next, attach the painted ioun stones by thin cord. Then you make the mobile invisible, and voila! You have your very own deceptive hat of ioun-orbiting! What's more you also have some relaxing...

    An Eberron Review by SKR

The Core Rules seem to use the verb enhance for that purpose, and it is okay. But since enhancement has a specific technical usage, as d20Dwarf points out, it's open to causing confusion. You can see why I use ensorcel! :)

    An Eberron Review by SKR

This problem cropped up years ago in a LARP system I co-wrote. We ended up using the word "Ensorcel" meaning to imbue magical powers into. Since it doesn't see any other usage I still tend to use this word when writing my own material.

Do your party give "running cost" to spellcasters?

Compensation for casting costs of spells for the party really must be borne by the party. But so too ought spells which the party specifically wants the Wizard to buy and learn. I've always found that if the Fighters chip in for the bull's strength they are much more likely to get it cast on...

    Is your fantasy world hollow?

Dead, take a look at this, which gives a good overview and origin. That would depend on the format of the sphere. But a 'solid' sphere could be terraformed to have seas and continents across much of its enormous surface. Outside is open to the vacuum, so the exterior is pretty much just a...

How do you treat Outer Space in your fantasy setting?

For the new Talyr campaign, if you go high enough you end up in the Heavens, which is the canopy of the Tree of Heaven. There are planets and stars dotted across the canopy. And if planets hanging from a tree shouldn't be able to orbit, well I respect mythology which never had any problem with...

    Is your fantasy world hollow?

For my newest campaign, I picture that the 'physical' world peters out to be replaced by the Abyss, the realm of the demons of the underworld. The previous one was similar, in that the cacodaemons dwelt in giant cities at the heart of the world; not that that mattered since the world had blown...

Magic-tech - A Story of Love and Hate

I voted 'I love it', but I want to qualify that. The tech-magic I like best is what I would call practical magic, those sensible applications of magic that are never written up into adventurer rules, that let societies take advantage of magic to advance themselves. Like Herpes Cineplex has said...

    House Rules Poll

I was set a challenge by a fellow DM (and a player in another of my games) to create a campaign that followed just the core rules. Though it hasn't yet started, so far I have drifted away from that ideal in a couple of areas. Firstly I wanted the Lizardfolk to play a role in the game, so I...

    Geriatric Grumbling

On the question of where to put sample DCs: I would most vehemently disagree that they deserve only to be in the DMG! As a player I need some idea of how the numbers on the character sheet relate to actual game play. Without knowing what a skill score means in comparison to what is required to...

Combats -- Good til the last (corpses) drop?

Yep, I use the fast-forward in combat when I am sure of the outcome. Generally it happens when a few small minions outlast their boss, and they are backed into a corner; or they are mindless creatures that don't understand futility. It's a slight cheat, but it is about saving time from a combat...

    Eberron need 3.5?

I am inclined to say that it is easy to downplay the role of psionics in Eberron. However, if you are going to use psionics in an Eberron campaign it might be better to use the Expanded Psionics Handbook. Then again, as much of the XPH is now in the SRD, that doesn't mean having to buy the book...

    Why Do You Game?

I'll have you know I am as sane as the next emu! :uhoh: I think it boils down to needing an outlet for my imagination. Role-playing has become the easiet way to achieve this, but when games are delayed due to other people's commitments, or my own illness, I need to make sure I do something...
