D&D 5E (2014) Until end of next turn or attack

I've had my eye on a Kobold Rogue for a while, but I haven't built it as there hasn't been an opportunity to play it (I DM currently).

D&D 4E 4e DMs: How many monsters do you use that inflict conditions?

My players are just about to hit 3rd level, and they're only met one monster that deals a condition other than Bloodied, and that was Immobilized. They'll meet another this week (Carrion Crawler) that can Slow / Immobilize / Stun every attack. While on the topic, one of the characters has a...

    Out running a temple

You could use wooden blocks (Jenga) with the minis to show the temple collapsing. Each turn, they could either run faster which would get them out of the area faster, or run a bit slower which would give them +5 or so to their Acrobatics to dodge the blocks. Or maybe some sort of attack...

What rule does your group ignore?

I'm a bit of a newb with 4e, but in PHB p 290, it says, "One per Combatant's Turn: You can take only one opportunity action during another compatant's turn, but you can take any number during a round." To me, that says that if you had 10 baddies run past you, you'd get 10 opportunity attacks...

D&D 4E The 4E combat poll: grind and more!

I'm diametrically opposed! I love the minis and like using the right ones or at least something close to it (although I don't own 13 Giant Rats, so I'm using tokens). I think that the minis and the map is a wonderful part of the game. And the plastic pre-painted minis are so nicely done for...

Monster Manual definition of "spider climb"?

Oh, silly me, I had only looked in the Glossary under "S". Thanks!

Monster Manual definition of "spider climb"?

The Monster Manual seems to apply the "spider climb" property to some critters (such as Carrion Crawler's "Speed 6, climb 6 (spider climb)"), but I can't find a definition. There is, of course, the Warlock spell Spider Climb, "You bestow on yourself the ability to cling to almost any surface...

    Opinions on Divine Boons...

I like the idea of using the spirit of Sir Keegan; thanks! I'm just avoiding having the gods themselves appear in any form as the PCs are too "minor". I ended up asking WotC support about the description interpretation and got a quick reply which generally agreed with others... For Bahamut's...

What rule does your group ignore?

Another rule that I ignore for simplicity for me (the DM) is to only roll initiative for each TYPE of enemy. For example, with a Goblin Chief, 3 Goblin minions, and 2 Guard Drakes, I'd only roll initiative 3 times (instead of 6) and put them on my initiative board grouped as each type as well...

    Who's Hype for Dark Sun???

D&D Encounters is ALSO going to be starting a Dark Sun adventure on 9 June.

    Opinions on Divine Boons...

At the end of _Keep on the Shadowfell_, each member of the party will be granted a choice of boons from the representatives of Bahamut and Pelor. Is there some description of what form "representatives" should take, or should I use a "burning bush" approach? (That could work for Bahamut, as...

    DM Hindsight is 20/20...

That's good advice. I didn't really think about the body image issue. I should have thought of that as Bob from _Knights of the Dinner Table_ had exactly the same "you ruined my character!" reaction many years back. I had this discussion with The Barbarian, and he liked the idea so much that...

    Splitting XP with long-term NPCs?

I will certainly not be giving them extra gold. It was their decision to take him on as an NPC (the other party playing just killed him on sight), and they are bribing him with a share of the treasure in return for him translating Goblin and telling them stuff about the areas of the dungeons...

    Who's Hype for Dark Sun???

There's a Dark Sun adventure being given out by WotC on Free RPG Day (19 June 2010, Free RPG Day 2010).

    Splitting XP with long-term NPCs?

I didn't find anything about this in the various books, but I assume there's a sentence about it somewhere... I'm DMing Keep on the Shadowfell and the party has picked up Splug (though we call him Splurg) as a long-term NPC. My secret DM plan is that Splug probably won't last past the end of...

    D&D 4E 4E Book advice

I'm a DM and I didn't find the DMGs all that useful (though I use published modules which I modify as I see fit). There's a few key pages (such as treasure level groupings), but they just didn't do it for me. The next book that interests me is the Players Strategy Guide. I see myself reading...

What rule does your group ignore?

I agree, and the Backgrounds allow for that (at least for one of them, anyway). I've told all of my players to give themselves a background to flesh out the character. Most of them went for +2 to a skill, but one of them (the 9-year-old playing a Dragonborn Fighter) really wanted to learn...

What rule does your group ignore?

We play for 2 hours once per week, so I'll have them only roll initiative once per meeting, and if we carry over an encounter, we don't roll initiative the next week. Just makes it move a little bit faster, and only one person was bothered by it.

    Distracted Players

I had a small problem with the 9-year-old (my son) at our table wandering around the store when it wasn't his turn. So, my solution was two-fold. First, we go to the store a bit early so he can look at stuff and get it out of his system. Second, I gave him an NPC to control (which I (the DM)...

    Taking the First Step

I really don't think that it will be. D&D is played by all ages and is generally friendly to new players of any age. For example, my current group consists of a wide range: 8-year-old boy, 14-year-old girl, 20-year-old man, 21-year-old woman, 23-year-old man, 35-year-old old man, 42-year-old...
