D&D 5E (2014) All of the Adventures at once! (Combining the Hoard, Princes, and Abyss in one campaign)

This is not an idea, it's sort of what I've ended up doing. I have two different campaigns. One started Hoard of the Dragon Queen and got side-tracked then went on hiatus and has restarted deep in the Underdark trying to get Out of the Abyss. The other has messed about in various adventures...

    Howling Void AL module (spoilers)

Hi Alpha, one of the reasons I ran this was because I played with you a time or two at Guardian Games when I lived in Oregon a while back. We had a great time! My group stuck to the Crystal Domes before flying out to battle the Cult. I appreciate the full on fantasy of this module but it does...

    D&D 5E (2014) OotA: NPCs Fate (Spoilers)

Derendil, killed fighting the Kuo Tuo Archpriest. Deep Gnomes, Stool, and Ront, killed during escape from Drow. Shoor, fell into a ravine, but later reappeared at the Kuo Tuo village. Sarith, cured of his spore infestation by a Lesser Restoration spell, now amnesiac. Buppido, disappeared during...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss- Post your pre-set encounters *Spoilers*

Yup. I think it's worthwhile to include some terrain information that maybe lets partys avoid combat as well as a twist of some sort to allow for RP and revelations. You might as well. The Dungeon Dozen blog is good for getting ideas for this. The DonJon generator is good for treasures...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss- Post your pre-set encounters *Spoilers*

It seems important to add treasure and gear to appropriate encounters especially since my group is still more or less naked and scraping by with whatever they can scrounge. They were just able to take a couple harpoons from a fight with some Merrow, which is an upgrade on the shortswords and...

D&D 5E (2014) If you use Group Initiative (like my group does), why do you use it?

In side initiative it is a big deal to go first each round. This is why I like to roll every round. It makes it less predictable. When I used individual initiative, I kept the some order for the whole combat. I found that this made combat stagnate a bit and still seemed like side initiative...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss- Post your pre-set encounters *Spoilers*

DARKLAKE TRAVEL Encounter 1: Whirlpool and 3 Merrow attack Encounter 2: Run Aground on Hag Island, Old Nanny, who lurks about in a the hulk of a long ship wreckage. She is vexed at the Water Weird in the hull of the ship who guards a treasure. The Weird warns of the consequences of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss- Post your pre-set encounters *Spoilers*

Does anyone have good ideas for Darklake encounters? I ran one with a whirlpool created by 3 merrow. It was a tough encounter and reinforced the "creatures corrupted by Demogorgon" theme, as the party is heading from the Kuo-Tua village to Gracklestugh by boat. Next I'm thinking of a "run...

    D&D 5E (2014) Huh... I've reviewed over 50 adventures for 5E!

I dig your reviews alot, but I am also looking forward to more play reports on the Apocalypse game. The DM notes from those games are as useful as reviews.

D&D 5E (2014) If you use Group Initiative (like my group does), why do you use it?

I switched to team initiative because individual initiative basically just guarantees some hero goes first when all the rolls are counted because I only want to roll once as the DM. And it makes for some good drama when we roll a straight dice contest at the beginning of each round.

D&D 5E (2014) DMing "Out of the Abyss"

Also, I've been thinking alot about EXITS from the Underdark. The module basically says to let the characters out after they've discovered that demon lords are infesting the underworld, but does not give actual exit points. I'd like to offer some choices and excitement with the actual escape...

D&D 5E (2014) DMing "Out of the Abyss"

I have the same situation. It looks like they are going to Grack but not the Fungus Forest. At least they didn't go straight to Blindenstone. I had to suggest it was easier and quicker to go to the Gracklestugh (and they had rescued a couple of duergar in Sloop). Looking at the travel time...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss- Post your pre-set encounters *Spoilers*

I like to use the tables to kickstart it, then "hand hew" the results! Other useful resources include the Dungeon Alphabet, and the Dungeon Dozen (which is also in blog form)

    D&D 5E (2014) [Out of the Abyss]Magic item distribution?

Damn statistics, but I think you want to add some treats to the mix.

D&D 5E (2014) DMing "Out of the Abyss"

Play the game that inspires your imagination the most. Just remember you can chop and change it, and most especially in Abyss, offer a way out almost anytime, so you don't have to completely lose your campaign in the dark!

D&D 5E (2014) Starting Out of the Abyss at Higher Level

That's kinda what I did. Our campaign had languished for a few months so I told them, "You are all in a drow prison camp, describe how you got there." Some made new characters (Lvl1), others used their older 4th level characters. They weren't particularly bothered to find their old gear for...

D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss- Post your pre-set encounters *Spoilers*

Here's what I generated using the automated tool posted on these forums (an OGRE?). Then I tweaked them to add more terrain and other ideas and stuff from the donjon generators. They walked right by the Temple of Ooze so I have been using the rescued halfling to encourage them to return for...

    Howling Void AL module (spoilers)

I ran the first half of this tonight as something thrown into a home game. I'm using it to direct the campaign toward the Princes dungeons. Anyways, this is a totally gonzo adventure! Kenku sky boats! Demons! Balloon backpacks and wing capes! Realmslore Puzzles! Lots of good stuff. My...

D&D 5E (2014) DMing "Out of the Abyss"

For what its worth, I ran the escape first series of Underdark encounters completely off the top of my head because I was running a spur of the moment Hangouts session, so you don't HAVE to prep ahead of time. :)
