    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E D&D be remembered for?

Many people worship Dis/Adv, but the fact is the system still uses modifiers. Personally, I think it's a bit overrated and it would be rather sad if a single mechanic is all 5e will be remembered for.

    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E D&D be remembered for?

Is it the name "Player's Option" that causes this confusion? Seriously, that book was not for the savvy player. Those books were a collection of optional rules for the game. The DM had to approve them. In fact, many rules were not compatible with each other. To complain that 2e was...

    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E D&D be remembered for?

Regardless, in 5e when the domination spell ends you know who charmed you. I found that 4e increased by prep time since it conflicted with my play style. There are a number of reasons for this, but it was mostly due to how heavy handed it was and how incompatible it was with older material.

    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E D&D be remembered for?

DM empowerment is a factor for those who experienced the effects of a Domination spell, the one cast on the DM across the last two editions. As a 2e gamer I don't feel that things are any different in 5e.

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

Yes, I think most groups did not use them. Those books gave you ideas and options for your game. You certainly didn't have to use them. With that said, restricting your 2e game to the core books was far less of an imperative than it was for 3e/3.5e (especially late 3.5). IMO, you're only...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

no, I really didn't word that comment correctly. I really only wanted to state that unlike 5e, you can create a 1st level multi-class character in 2e.

    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E D&D be remembered for?

That's only for a small section of the FR. As I understand it, it leaves fans of the FR a bit disappointed.

    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E D&D be remembered for?

It certainly won't be an edition remembered for its content.

lol yes, you could .... I had deleted that edition from memory. :)

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

To some extent this is true, but in other ways it's also limiting. For example, one might not agree with the profs granted by the acolyte background for a cleric of a nature god. Also, complex backgrounds are poorly represented. For example, a blacksmith who later became a pirate after...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

Yes, something simplified but still granular enough to be interesting. I've always thought that each ability score should have two modifiers associated with it. That way you can have some stats like STR grant a +1 to hit, +2 damage. Of course, I like how a 20 CON in 2e grants a...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

Yes, that good point about 3e pre-reqs, but 2e kits had pre-reqs too. I think 3e styled stats are far worse than 2e for dead scores. In 2e a 13 STR didn't give you a modifier, but it did give you a weight limit, a 4% BB/LG, and a 7 open Doors. Every increase in INT gave you another 5% to...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

Yes, I wouldn't expect them to do that again, but what they are doing isn't sufficient either. It's sad, because the lack of conversion rules for each setting is keeping me away from 5e. I'd rather just stick with 2e. It certainly wouldn't take much for WotC to release a rules supplement...

cool, I never saw that. Is that in the 3e or 3.5e DMG? what page?

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

The designers of 2e wanted to change it, but TSR wouldn't let them because they wanted it to be compatible with 1e modules. Thac0 was invented for that reason. I don't agree. The skill resolution system in 2e is also very easy to use. There are no DCs to remember either. You simply roll...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

It's easy to be critical of 2e's multi-class system, but you can deny that it's the only system that allows you to create a multi-class character at level 1. I was hoping 5e would fix 3e style multi-classing to allow for that again, but they didn't even bother. Instead they continued with...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

All the great campaign settings are a huge draw for 2e. In addition, some of the best modules and dungeon magazine adventures were written during that era. 2e also has the highest published monster count of any edition, and they are not just stat blocks either. Now, as far as mechanics...

    D&D 5E (2014) So 5 Intelligence Huh

In D&D (2e), it used to be that Animal Intelligence had a value of 1. In 5e, I don't think you can read anything insightful from a monster's intelligence score. INT scores are higher in 5e to facilitate saving throws.

    D&D 5E (2014) So 5 Intelligence Huh

I think not saying "No" can degrade the amount of fun for everyone at the table. I know my players have more fun when the story isn't being hijacked in an invalid direction.

that's why you ask for a check, then you don't feel so bad when the player fails. :)
