Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

The general rule at my table is: Authority rests with the player; a player may cede authority to the DM. I assume that a player who creates a Lawful Good Paladin of Heironeous does so because the player is interested in: Altruism, respect for life, and a concern for the dignity of sentient...

D&D 5E (2014) So, what are your plans now?

Wait and see. It really depends on what content is available in the basic (starter?) set and/or the cost of PDFs of the PHB, DMG, MM; plus, how the rest of my group feels about the game.

How often have you gamed in the past year?

Fortnightly, but we do miss a handful of sessions a year. So I voted every three weeks.

DMG & MIC Random Treasure Tables Question

The DMG tables have a high degree of variance. A CR 1 treasure can range from zero coins, zero goods, zero items to 40pp, 12,000gp in art, and a ring of Water Walking (15,000gp). The tables in the MIC are much more stable. In theory, the tables in the DMG and MIC should both average out to be...

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

I don't have my 4e books on me. So, from Wizards. Make of it what you will. It seems clear to me that the martial power source is non-magical within the fictional 4e D&D universe.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item Creation: Which book should contain rules for magic item creation?

I don't like this word. I want players to be able to craft certain items on their own: potions, scrolls, and alchemical items. Those rules should be handy for the player and would fit in the Player's Handbook. For other items: weapons, armor, rods and staves, and wondrous items; I'd prefer the...

How many hit points do you have?

3.5 had a similar ability with the Combat Awareness feat. So long as the character was maintaining his combat focus, he could learn the exact current hit point total of each adjacent enemy and ally.

D&D 5E (2014) When should our warriors see their first +1 longswords?

Short answer: Whenever it comes up on the random treasure table.

    D&D 5E (2014) Short Rest Poll

Combats in my games tend to be either a) a series of 3-5 encounters that bleed into one another, or b) a single encounter that taxes the party. In both cases there are usually days between between encounter(s). It's unlikely that short rest rules will ever impact my game.

    Dungeons?

My AD&D and 3.x Dungeon Master's Guides breakdown adventures into three types: dungeon, urban, and wilderness. I am using dungeon as how they are generally defined in those books. +1 This is what I was thinking about when I posted the query.

    Dungeons?

Assuming your typical campaign... what percentage of encounters take place in a dungeon/cavern environment?

How Many Hours Do You Usually Spend in a Level?

My games tend to run on a curve: low levels (1-2) are usually a session or two (roughly 5-10 hours), mid levels (3-13) are usually two to five sessions (roughly 10-25 hours), high levels (14+) are back to a session or two (roughly 5-10 hours).

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

You may come to regret that!

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

Lets start with the notion that alignments in my campaigns are fairly broad, and characters can have tendencies (e.g. Neutral Good (Neutral)) and inconsistencies. In fact, I expect there to be a certain amount of inconsistency in the portrayal - it adds depth to the character! Lets add to that...

D&D 5E (2014) Would a repeat of the large errata from the previous edition put you off of Next?

What I do when the system comes out will depend on a host of factors, of which the errata question is one part. Until then, I'll continue to advocate for my position - no more large amounts of errata.

D&D 5E (2014) Would a repeat of the large errata from the previous edition put you off of Next?

It is a selling point to some and a turnoff to others. For me and mine it is a turnoff. We generally play campaigns that last multiple years; having character abilities work consistently is important to us. Errata, especially if it is constantly being tweaked (as was the case with Polymorph in...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

I am a fan of alignment. It is a useful shorthand (in combination with race, class, prestige class, region and deity) of signalling to the DM the type of character that the player is interested in, and thus the types of challenges the player is interested in facing. When a player says s/he is...

Pathfinder 1E Mythic Pathfinder = how to break a game

Rather than being passive-aggressive and intentionally destroying the game -- a system that you know the rest of the table is enjoying -- would it not be more productive to have a conversation with your group about your dislike of Pathfinder and Mythic? Would it not be more honorable of you to...
