    D&D 5E (2014) Why Balance is Bad

I don't know about the OP, but I have pretty good notes on my last 3.5 campaign. I'll type it up tomorrow and start posting it in the Story Hour forum (I've been meaning to do this anyway), and link to it here (assuming this thread or the other thread doesn't get closed). The narrative was...

    Building a campaign

Check out this thread in the RPGs & Tabletop Gaming Discussion forum. It has lots of useful tidbits on how to plan a session. It contains a much longer post where I lay out how I do things.

D&D 5E (2014) Why the claim of combat and class balance between the classes is mainly a forum issue. (In my opinion)

First, at the levels where Greater Magic Weapon +5 becomes "necessary" (17-20), 3,000gp is also a fraction of your expected wealth gain, and an even smaller fraction of your average treasure per character from encounters (see DMG page 54). Second, a magic weapon (or lack thereof) is not the...

D&D 5E (2014) Why the claim of combat and class balance between the classes is mainly a forum issue. (In my opinion)

If we are talking 3.x here, then your math appears to be a little funny. A masterwork weapon is +1 to-hit, a +3 weapon is, well, +3 to-hit. The difference is not -5 to-hit, it's -2. Now, if you meant to talk about damage reduction, then you are correct; -5 to damage on a 1d8 is pretty damning...

    Great Moments in Greyhawk History?

The Battle of Pesh could be pretty interesting. In the shadow of White Plume Mountain the Wind Dukes of Aaqa invoked the Rod of Law to banish Miska the Wolf-Spider. The result was, amongst other things, the banishment of Miska, the deaths of the vast majority of Wind Dukes, and the creation of...

D&D 5E (2014) What would be your preferred format for the core rules of 5E?

I agree with howandwhy99 that ideally they should have different formats to satisfy their primary distribution channels: big box stores, small game stores, and online; and for their end-users: new players, existing players, and lapsed players. I am not sure that it is economically feasible...

Planning games, how do YOU do it?

Over the years my methodology has evolved considerably in how I plan, build and referee campaigns; I expect it to continue to evolve going forward. That said, here is how I am currently prepping my campaign: The game is 3.5 D&D with influences from 1e and 2e source books. The campaign is set in...

What if the core setting of D&D was ALL the settings of D&D?

Ah. You made up terminology and when challenged on the meaning of said terminology state that it is not worth your time to define it. Nice! [/rolls eyes]

What if the core setting of D&D was ALL the settings of D&D?

I am going to take your post out of order. Forgive me. I think you run the risk of loosing a lot of the nuance that the individual settings have developed. See my comments on Greyhawk below. Greyhawk has multiple defining traits depending on which era of Greyhawk you use. Pre-Wars Greyhawk...

OotS vs your game: how does the equipment compare?

Yes and no. It matches the current campaign I am playing. It does not match the previous two, however. B.S. It changes the nature and difficulty of the game, but does not make the game unplayable. See below. And a significant portion of their encounters are high EL, with low CR creatures...

    {D&D Settings Tournament} Round 2

I don't know, I can certainly see Planescape upsetting Forgotten Realms. Planescape is pretty popular on these boards! (Didn't Planescape win Morrus' poll a few months ago?)

    D&D 5E (2014) What's Next for D&D's Campaign Settings? (And an idea/suggestion for WotC!)

It certainly is. However, too much information provided can actually increase the amount of time it takes a DM to complete his/her prep-work. It might only take me five minutes to come up with some notes on how to join the Knights of the Hart or fifteen minutes to dig out the source book, look...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's Next for D&D's Campaign Settings? (And an idea/suggestion for WotC!)

Yes, it is. It may not be for you, but it is for me. What I want is an outline of a world so that I can fill in the blanks. That is exactly what the '83 boxed set gives me - an outline! How do I join the Knights of the Hart? Lets find out in play! What does it mean to be a Knight of the Hart...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's Next for D&D's Campaign Settings? (And an idea/suggestion for WotC!)

This is a feature, not a flaw. Thanks! I actually own almost all the PDFs on Greyhawk from when they were previously for sale. My physical copy of the Greyhawk boxed set is thirty years old - and it shows. The rest of my physical collection is much the same. I'd gladly pay for a new physical...

What is your favorite region within a published setting?

I really enjoy the Greyhawk post-wars region of: Furyondy, Veluna, Verbobonc, Highfolk, the Shield Lands, and the Empire of Iuz; especially focusing in on the County of Crystalreach and the Great Northern Crusade. I enjoy running and playing in games with a heavy dose of politics, intrigue, and...

D&D 5E (2014) Evil characters material not going to be in the PHB

Really?!? Why? It was the Sicilian who lost! The winner was the Robin Hood who "unlike other Robins Hoods, [could] speak with an English accent!"

Ryan Dancey: This is why there was no M:tG setting for D&D

I believe Mark Rosewater referred to the Weatherlight Saga as a failure. I cannot find the quote, but it was referenced in this thread on Reddit. I think this quote from Reddit sums up a lot of what many Magic players feel: I think WotC made the right decision in keeping the two brands...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

pemerton - If I were to rewrite the race, deity, prestige class (where applicable), and monster descriptions for AD&D, BD&D, or 3.x D&D, in a manner similar to what was done in Worlds & Monsters and 4e D&D, would that be sufficient to equal 4e in its ability to generate an "indie" play experience?
