D&D 3.x Which DnD3E 'Premium' reprint would you like to see next?

I'll also add my support to the Rules Cyclopedia. However, since this thread is tagged as 3.0/3.5, I'll cast my vote in favor of what is widely considered one of the best, if not the best, modules from that era - The Red Hand of Doom.

    Considering our next campaign goal

We once ran a game set in Ringland, the Shield Lands, Greyhawk. This was after Iuz had conquered the Shield Lands and orcs roamed the lands freely. Ringland was a point-of-light in an otherwise dismal land. The orcs and Iuz were unable to perceive the existence of Ringland due to the Fount of...

    Alternate ability score generation

Each character has the same stat array; the d6 just sets the order for that character. For example: 3d6 are rolled six times resulting in: 17, 15, 11, 10, 10, 8. Each player will use this array. For each 3d6 roll (17, 15, etc.) Umbran rolls a d6 where 1 equals strength, 2 equals dexterity...

Which path would you take --Swamp or Forest?

The characters are 2nd level? Drop rumors of a huge green dragon in the forest. That will get them into the swamp! Seriously though, this is a threat assessment/time management issue. I think you are on the right path trying to offer them a compelling choice. My advice to you would be...

    Considering our next campaign goal

This sounds almost like an orcish version of Fantasy Flight's Midnight setting. It might be something to check out if you go this route.

    Alternate ability score generation

You reroll. I think the OP left that part out. At least, that's how I've seen the method done. @darjr - One alternate that we have occasionally discussed (but never implemented) is: 2d6+6, arrange to taste. It guarantees no exceptionally weak stats while providing some level of randomization.

My recent experience with a fighter - and how that flies in the face of the typical line

Or battlefield control, or debuffs, or tactical teleportation? As a wizard there are a lot of ways to shear the proverbial sheep. Or, perhaps, you might have been a bit too reckless? Perhaps you positioned yourself poorly on the battlefield? Took too many Attacks of Opportunity, Full Attacks...

What to do when things go right?

As a DM: I roll with it. I run my campaigns using Mythic: Game Master Emulator, there are numerous threads (both individual to a PC and collective to the party) in play at any given time. When the PCs find events turn in their favor -- which happens quite often -- they can enjoy a brief moment...

    The ethics of ... death

Thanks. That's a word I haven't heard before here in Minnesota. Or on other message boards, for that matter!

    The ethics of ... death

Can you drop this phrasing? Not all of us are from Yorkshire and know what "blag the DM" means. Is it really that difficult for you to just say divinations, etc. rely on DM fiat?

How to avoid ridiculous player character builds

Actually, there are quite a few of us here who run sandbox-style campaigns! 1st Edition actually had 5 classes; monk was a separate class, not a subclass (PHB, page 13). In addition, there were the five subclasses, Bards in Appendix II, and dual classing/multiclassing. So there was a little...

How to avoid ridiculous player character builds

Not a problem; one of my degrees is in Economics with a focus in Behavioral Economics. I find it fascinating how different people can react quite differently to otherwise similar incentive programs. Our current "Heroes of the North" campaign is my first experience playing in a controlled magic...

How to avoid ridiculous player character builds

Wishlists are one way to handle it, certainly. I am stating something broader and more encompassing than strictly player-initiated wishlists. It might also include DM foreknowledge of an upcoming encounter and wishing to provide extra tools to the party. Or, DMs wishing to use treasure to...

How to avoid ridiculous player character builds

There is an assumption inherent in Tuft's post that the DM isn't just providing the players with useful and appropriate magic items to begin with. If I am giving out Boots of Levitation and Potions of Fly as a normal part of distributing treasure, does it actually matter that I am limiting magic...

    The ethics of ... death

Well, in my case we do run long-term campaigns; each averaging approximately three years plus or minus a couple of months, and all set within the same broader campaign milieu. We also use a character stable of 4-5 characters per player. Many characters have also taken the Leadership feat, and...

    The ethics of ... death

This is more or less how the bodak adventure was run in my example. There is also character stable and troupe-style play which helps mitigate the loss of any one particular character. Personally, I am a big fan of the characters stable approach.

    D&D 5E (2014) 07/08/2013 - Legends & Lore Monsters and the World of D&D

+1 Between the last two week's Legends & Lore and James Wyatt's Wandering Monsters series I have gone from neutral-positive to neutral-negative on D&DNext.

    The ethics of ... death

Personally, I rather enjoy having SoD effects available to me. They help contribute to the particular feel that I like to get out of playing D&D. However, the frequency of use by many adventure designers, coupled with a 'gotcha' style of play, I think, has given the mechanic a terribly bad name...

    Why Not Share Spellbooks?

You do so the same way we conduct business in real life: negotiation and consideration. "Yeah, I'll give you access to my spellbook so you can learn the grease spell, but, I need some mandrake root from the old forest for this experiment I am conducting. And I'll also like to copy locate object...
