D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

Yes, personally, I would start with the most prominent thing in the room being described, whatever it is. If that is 8 orcs with scimitars jumping up from their card game, I'd start with that (and maybe the table with the cards and coins), and only make reference to the other features of the...

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

I was looking through some old Dungeon mags for an adventure to possibly run and thought I'd snap pix of a few examples of boxed text for us to look out (with the caveat that without the context of the adventure some of these might be better or worse than how they seem by themselves). #1 is...

D&D General What Bits of History Inspire Your Homebrew Setting?

My current setting is a mash of ancient world and medieval stuff (as fits D&D). As the central setting location is a Republic that arose after many years of chaos after the fall of a conquering foreign empire, I have taken events and cultural ideas from Ancient Athens, early Roman republic...

D&D General Vanity Frankenstein 5E: My homebrew D&D project [+]

Okay, so I completely rewrote the "Welcome to Makrinos" section and removed almost all the detailed info that got us in the weeds with the republic's various elected offices and blah blah blah. Instead, I took advice from @Swarmkeeper and another friend not on ENworld and went with an approach...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

"Well, I've never heard of it. . ." is not the rock solid evidence for something not existing that you think it is, buddy.

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

I find it useful if written well and concisely. 3 to 5 sentences at most and then other details listed to be shared if the party looks closer/investigates/interacts.

WotC Chris Perkins announces Retirement from Dungeons and Dragons

Turns out I do have that issue! (I need to save it along with the issue of Dragon I got a letter printed in). Coincidentally, it is also the issue where Perkins left being editor of Dungeon to take over WotC’s two Star Wars mags they printed at the time

WotC Chris Perkins announces Retirement from Dungeons and Dragons

Oh wow! I have been looking for this letter for years! I couldn’t remember when I wrote it and thought it was at the end of 2E, not a year into 3e! Thanks for sharing it, @Echohawk! 🤷🏾‍♂️

WotC Chris Perkins announces Retirement from Dungeons and Dragons

I still run a 5E conversion of his "A Wizard's Fate" (from Dungeon Magazine #37 (September/October 1992)) by him regularly when I do DM for pay stuff for Dungeons & Drafts - Pittsburgh.

WotC Chris Perkins announces Retirement from Dungeons and Dragons

I remember him as just a prolific submitter of adventures to Dungeon Mag. He wrote some good ones (even though for reasons I can't remember any more I wasn't a fan at the time). I once signed a letter to Dungeon as "The Anti-Perkins" but I can no longer remember which issue it was printed in (I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Users of D&D 2014 - What are you using from 2024? +

Foremost, I have adopted the 2024 Exhaustion rules. A handful of spells that are just a little clearer now (can't even remember which ones) I am adopting Weapon Mastery for my VF5E project, except as the end point of a system of proficiency that still uses slots similar to 2E and greatly reduces...

Compare The Market's Tabletop Gaming Survey

It would have to be a fairly sizable and valuable collection to insure separately. I have a ton of books and minis but my homeowners insurance should cover some of that should the worst happen.

    D&D 5E (2024) What are your 2024 houserules?

I’m not playing 2024 DnD but I could tell you what I’m taking from it for my homebrew ruleset. But maybe “what rules at you taking from 2024 D&D for your 2014 or other 5e games?” would be better as its own thread.

D&D 5E (2014) A Middling DM Runs Curse of Strahd

I was wondering if it was something like that. I have the original Ravenloft module and have skimmed it, but have never read CoS and I only played two sessions of a CoS campaign before having to drop out and that never came up. Thanks.

D&D 5E (2014) A Middling DM Runs Curse of Strahd

Okay, take two. . . I am not caught up yet but I had a question about this scene where the party first meets Strahd. So they leave at the crack of dawn. . . 30 to 40 minutes later (so very early morning after dawn) they run into Strahd? He can stand out in the daylight?
