I gave them some background on the fact they were working as caravan guards up on the surface. One night when it wasn't any of their turns for nightwatch the Drow attacked, using their sleep poison they are famous for, and killing/driving off the rest of the caravan.

I'd probably take a few cues from the Warforged UA article to custom his race. Make him a fighter, and use Feats so that he gets the grappler related feat. Also, maybe Tavern Brawler.

Personally i prefer the '00' + '0' = 100 or 0 depending on the system. Gives you 1 -100 or 0 - 99.. while I can see the logic behind '90' + '0' = 100 that proceeds to extra math I don't feel like taking the time for. For me the results read better for 100 by reading the normal d10 die first...
