(4e) How often do minions appear in your game?

100% DM here, and I'd say probably about 80% of my encounters have minions in them. I think they're the perfect thug, zealot, and guard characters. It allows for a lot more enemies in a fight while beefing up the overall combat without making it too complicated.

What alignment is Cobra Commander - the Official Word

I did a variant on the thiss I command, but he did have the snake javelins and the big hooded cobra helmet. Ironically, the players didn't catch the homage' until after the session. They loved that guy, though.

What alignment is Cobra Commander - the Official Word

Mighty-morphin-G.I.-Rangers!!! Ugh, no kidding. You know what I wish? WotC gets the ok from Hasbro to do G.I. Joes miniature skirmish game. I would exhaust my plasti-crack funds on that. Would have been nice, too, seeing how I modeled the design of my ultimate baddie in my current...

When is metagaming too much as a DM?

I don't bother with either method strictly. It's much easier, imo. High fort = physically impressive character High Ref = intuitive or reflexive High will = calculated and cunning High AC = subjective Those are the factors. No rogue should (unless he's bluffing) ever look like he's not...

    Bonding between DM and Player

Out of my five players: One has been my friend since grade school. One has been a friend since sharing an office space with him almost ten years ago. The other three were met at differing times through a community message board for gaming, but have all become close friends. They've taken...

    Online Character Database

There's iplay4e characters Not sure of the legalities, but it does allow you to upload your .ddi character file and it will put it in a digital format (no data is displayed, just the names powers) I saw this on another site.

Was 4e design based around the suite of proposed D&Di tools? EDIT: found quote.

No prob, Aberznezerzny. You asked an honest question without being insulting or coming off as looking to bait for an edition war... Which, technically, means we're supposed to assault you with no quarter... I think we'll let it slide :)

    I've DMed 4e and I PREFER DMing: A poll

No question, 4e. It takes a fraction of the time any other edition took for me to plan a session. With the DDi, I have so much more at my fingertips when planning, as well. I'll never DM an older edition of D&D again. As far as other games, I've only ever DM'd one game of Sorcerer the rpg...

Was 4e design based around the suite of proposed D&Di tools? EDIT: found quote.

Yeah, I spent too much time reading all the articles, interviews, and preview material and never saw this.. However, I think the DDi tools have defintely been designed with 4e in mind ;)

    Games you won't play

Right now, with my limited gaming time, I'll only play/run 4e D&D. With more time available for gaming, I would possibly open up to more options, but system-wise, this is pretty much what I prefer. From an asthetics point, my group and I like the same stuff, so there's not much I'd give...

(4e) New to Skill Challenges - looking for help/advice

Impressive articles from the skillforge, thanks DtheG! I've been using the critical hits list for some time, and it's always nice to find something new!

(4e) New to Skill Challenges - looking for help/advice

Those both look like good ideas and are both mostly social challenges. As such, diplomacy, bluff, insight, history would probably be primary, with intimidate or another knowledge (dungeoneering, nature, etc..) as secondary. In such a case as the "am I guilty or not" scenario, I would put heavy...

    Surviving low-level old school D&D

I'm surprised no one mentioned the most obvious: History only remembers the victors. I can't tell you how many times I've brought up Jans Torsen, the fallen Jedi who saved a galaxy, or the adventures of Tykfal and Banarak in the Wildlands... But I've probably never once mentioned anything...

Confidence Index: A D&Di poll on VTT and Char Visualizer

Yeah, that's sort of a loaded poll. I don't think they're going to go forward with the virtual table and might never do the Character Visualizer. They're both so low on my wishlist that I wouldn't care if they ever did. However, I do think they're going to hit a lot of intended marks from...

    Bait & Switch

Interesting conundrum. I would say the DM should have pulled the player aside and requested the change before character creation, but informed to keep it quiet until the reveal. As a strict rule when I DM (which is pretty much always) I don't mess with the player's mechanics. If I allow X to...

[Monte Cook's Dungeon A Day] Anyone try it?

Neat idea, but with my DDI subscription, xbox live account, and monthly 4e book/minis budget, it's not something I'll be picking up.

    Magic: Innate or Learned?

Neither, both, and yes & no. Part of the way I try to keep magic being "magical" is never defining it. One wizard may explain his powers from years of study, while another is from a long line of them. If I define it, I take away some of the mystical properties, imo. Not that I dislike the...

Forked Thread: DDI Changes - Your reaction

Already have a yearly subscription and expected it to increase in price, eventually. I'm excited to get the finalized stuff early, because waiting for the Barbarian was torture on the guy playing the playtest Bbn in our group. I expect this will also increase the amount of Dragon data we get...

What's so special about your homebrew?

Mine is a mix of Howard's Conan with Thieve's World (the series, not the Green Ronin CS). It is heavy Sword & Sorcery with an over-arching theme of the Gods' will on people, i.e. differing religions warring, though there are no clerics or divine power. Currently, the cult of Zehir succeeded in...

Character Secrets - Dual or Group effort?

I agree 100%. Also, in addition to the reasons given, not all games finish (I know, I was shocked when I heard it, too). Often, when the games die out, players then talk about their characters' mysterious pasts and such. In some cases, the game may have fared better had the stories of the...
