D&D 5E (2014) Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide: Player Content Guesses

Anything official about Bladesingers yet? If not any good guesses? What I want is a subclass of wizard that gets martial weapon proficiency and the ability to make an attack as a bonus action if their action was casting a spell, much sooner than either the Eldritch Knight or Valor Bard now...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell

That is not correct. The only limitation on the amount of spellcasting is bonus action spells. So caster uses action to cast fireball, npc uses reaction to cast counterspell, pc caster uses his reaction to cast counterspell, no bonus action spells were cast at all in the above example.

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

If you are not in initiative then you don't have "turns". Ready says this, "Sometimes you want to get the jump on a foe or wait for a particular circumstance before you act. To do so, you can take the Ready action on your turn, which lets you act using your reaction before the start of your...

Except you can't ready actions outside of initiative either.

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

Except that is not how the rules work. If you want the assassin to have a better chance to go first, give them advantage on the initiative roll, if that isn't enough give the guard disadvantage on his initiative roll. Handing out advantage/disadvantage on ability checks like initiative is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

He doesn't yet that is why there is 'surprise'. He will know once the assassin attacks, which the assassin should do since declaring that intent is what started initiative in the first place.

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

Tell your assassin player to stop metagaming. How does his character know who has won initiative?

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

If there isn't an attack why was initiative asked for? If initiative is called for yes the unsuspecting party is no longer surprised after their first turn, those are the rules. This scenario seems to be a failing of the DM not the system. Combat ends when the fighting stops. "Repeat step 4...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

How can you read the order of combat section and think what dictates the beginning of combat to be vague at all? Step 1. Determine Surprise, if there was going to be an opening attack of some sort wouldn't that fall under 'surprise'? Step 2, Establish Position, how could there be an opening...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

When you are surprised you can't take any type of action or move right. After your first turn you can take reactions right. Reactions are a type of action. So after your turn is over, you are no longer surprised. Again here is Mike Mearls talking about when surprise ends...

D&D 5E (2014) A fan adventure that looks great... I wonder who wrote it?

[Poruku] seems to also be a poster here, with only 1 post though that leads to this video link on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fz7rQpIKwkU and that youtube channel is under the name of Corey Hickson.

    D&D 5E (2014) When to Roll Initiative

The only rule of initiative is it is rolled when combat begins. You can not make an attack outside of initiative. Sometimes I use turn by turn initiative in exploration but it is rare, mostly only immediately after a fight. The second someone is about to make a hostile action towards another...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

You can't take a bonus action if you can't take an action. You can't interact with an object unless you move or take an action. "You choose when to take a bonus action during your turn, unless the bonus action’s timing is specified, and anything that deprives you of your ability to take...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

Surprise states: If you’re surprised, you can’t move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can’t take a reaction until that turn ends. You have a reaction just like anyone else you just can't take it until your first turn ends. First round of combat: 20 - Fighter swings...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

rd 1 Fighter goes, Dragon takes his turn but can't perform any actions or move, Assassin goes, ....... The dragon takes his turn before the assassin goes so the assassin does not get to make any of their hits automatic crits.

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

There is no such thing as a surprise round, there is just being surprised. The term surprise round is never once used in the books. Surprise lasts until the creature can do something, that is at the end of it's first turn when it can take reactions. Since it can take reactions like cast the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

From the section on surprise. "If you’re surprised, you can’t move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can’t take a reaction until that turn ends." Your first turn is spent not doing anything, but it is very clearly you taking a turn in the combat. They can take...

    D&D 5E (2014) Assassinate

The RAW on the issue is pretty clear. As with everything as a DM disagreeing with the rules and changing them to better fit your game and group is encouraged, but that doesn't change how the rules as written work. There can not be attacks outside of initiative, all participants in the combat...
