D&D 5E (2014) Hope for an open GSL?

If 5th edition succeeds there will absolutely be a 6th edition (or 5.5 or 5 Ultimate). I would be planning for success if I were WoTC. Planning for success with an OGL for 5e means opening the possibility for a Pathfinder 5 somewhere down the road when the inevitable 6e is launched.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multi-class support in 5E

It may not possible to represent this sort of character from level 1 on the way I would prefer. One of my earliest D&D character's was a Fighter/Mage/Druid. Something that I could not recreate after 2e to my own satisfaction. Waiting until level 6 to be the equivalent of 2/2/2 seems like the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multi-class support in 5E

This is why I prefer 1e/2e or 4e's Hybrid classes. If I am trying to model that kind of early, lifetime training I want it reflected in my character from level 1. If I have to dip into multiple classes while levelling just to vaguely arrive at my initial character concept, it feels like a...

A new Edition/Iteration of D&D is really necessary?

One of my favorite game systems is Hero System/Champions, a game that defined "take hours to make a character". I do understand the appeal for deep options and complexity in character building. I just don't like it in my D&D. To me, the saving grace of a class system is the ease and elegance...

A new Edition/Iteration of D&D is really necessary?

I think the answer is yes. My group has been playing 4e since it was released. For most of the group it is their only edition of D&D. We enjoy the game. But, we've already started talking about house rules and deep structural changes to address what we see as significant issues with the...

    Tweet gleanings

Not entirely true. Charisma based adjustments to reaction rolls, and the expectation that an NPC reaction to a players efforts to interact with them would be affected by the reaction roll, were added very early in the Gygax rules. We used them in 1977, but they weren't new then.

What doesn't belong in the "core"

Yep, like "Boromir a Captain of Gondor".

D&D 5E (2014) Hope for an open GSL?

Well, the lawyers were probably not on salary. That type of review is routinely performed by specialized outside counsel. There is also some non-zero amount of lost sales attributable to the SRD. I actually agree with you that the net realization was probably greater than zero. Whether the net...

D&D 5E (2014) Hope for an open GSL?

The wikipedia article would seem to offer more support for WoTC doing more public beta testing (which they claim they are going to do) than sharing of the IP when the product goes to market. I think it would be very difficult to place a value to WoTC of the network effects of the OGL. The...

    D&D 3.x 1e-3e vs. 4e: The inverted difficulty curve in D&D 5e design

That particular curve in video games also effects the time spent at level. Those easy early levels are designed to go by very quickly and get your character to the sweet spot of the game. If you're going to match that difficulty curve, I think you also need to move away from the flat...

Core Classes: What and how many

I would prefer to see broader class support in the PHB, 12 or so classes, but shallower. If we are going to see the kind of multiple PHB, Complete X type of splats of previous WoTC editions, I would like them to divide along tier lines rather than class lines. In other words, I'd rather have...

An Essay to Wizards of the Coast

Like maybe a utility spell picked at 2nd level or maybe 2 choices at 2nd and written into a spellbook. Then the wizard could pick between them given sufficient time to rest? Then maybe they should get other picks of utilities every so many levels. Yeah that system would be better than what we...

    OD&D Stuff You'd Like from OD&D, AD&D, Holmes, B/X, BECMI, RC?

Either the end of the NPC section or towards the front of the combat section. I'm going from memory; I don't have the book here at work.

    OD&D Stuff You'd Like from OD&D, AD&D, Holmes, B/X, BECMI, RC?

I'm most familiar with the AD&D DMG (1e). I believe OSRIC included it.

    OD&D Stuff You'd Like from OD&D, AD&D, Holmes, B/X, BECMI, RC?

I would like to see a morale subsystem brought back, to emphasize that every combat doesn't need to be a slaughter to the last man. I'd like to see the something similar to the old NPC reaction system from 1e. Tweaked to work with the skills instead of raw charisma. I want combat to be sped...

    30 and out?

I don't think the rules should explicitly address it. Campaign end (at what ever level) is the purview of the local table.

    Balance and Uniformity (an essay)

I think you have illustrated a great point about presentation. I have always wondered if some of the dislike of 4e and its powers for all classes would have been lessened if the power descriptions had been more like spell descriptions in 1e/2e. Forex. Fighter had a "Tearing Blow" attack who's...

How important is multi-classing, and why?

I like multi-classing of the 1e and 4e hybrid class styles. If a character concept needs parts of two (or three) different classes to work, I want the character to start from level 1 as a multi. That's why 3e level based multi-classing was always a non-starter for me, even if you could balance...

Same rules or different Rules (PC vs NPC)

Mark me down for different, with better rules for applying PC levels to monsters than we got in 4e. I don't go there very often in a campaign, but sometimes you just want a blue dragon with 8 levels of sorceror for the pucker factor.
