Return old-school terminology: subclass, demihuman, etc.

Demi-human had the very specific meaning of non human race that could be played as a PC. The connotation of less than human was very deliberate. EGG was very vocal in his attitudes about playing non-humans. Its the same reason for the racial limits. I agree that the game has grown bigger than...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Design Goals (Article)

Maybe it was just the newness of the whole thing, but I can't recall a single discussion or argument for letting an AC go below -10. OD&D and 1e AD&D used a lookup matrix not THAC0 so the limit was, in fact, extremely well baked. I don't expect D&D to ever return to descending AC and lookup...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Design Goals (Article)

No question and my argument wasn't about the math. Rather, how changing the math killed the baked in assumption of an upper boundary on how good ACs could be. As I said before, you can clearly cap ascending AC, but people will argue about it. Those weren't arguments we had with descending ACs...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Design Goals (Article)

Yes, but. The bounded matrix of descending AC was responsible for a lot of the ability of early versions of the game to have monsters of broadly varying power levels be a creditable encounter for a wide variety of levels. It means that multiple level adventuring parties can work. Some of the...

Monte on Life and Death (And Resurrection)

I've used something very like this in a campaign. The empire considered anyone who has died and know walks the earth to be undead. They also had very strict title/property ownership laws barring the undead. Though certain enlightened reforms allowed the undead to retain certain personal property...

    Falling from Great Heights

Not just rumour, EGG posted as much on this forum. IIRR he was talked out of it by some of his players.

What Player Abilities Should the Game Encourage?

D'oh, so it is. Nothing to see here, move along folks.

What Player Abilities Should the Game Encourage?

Isn't there a difference between not rewarding and penalizing? And Savage Wombat I would XP you but must spread etc.

    Falling from Great Heights

Except rolling a natural 20 to survive it is 50,000 in a million chance. A d20 is just not granular enough for me. I like the big handsful of dice method. Yeah, they may all come up 1 and you walk away but the odds of that are governed by the laws of really big numbers and if it happens it can...

What Player Abilities Should the Game Encourage?

I think "roleplaying" is too broad a term for this discussion. I would consider all 8 areas wrecan outlined as part of roleplaying. To your specific scenarios; speaking to the king has elements of preparation, problem solving and know your dm. Finding out what the thief really wants is...

What Player Abilities Should the Game Encourage?

Very interesting topic. Thanks for putting this together and cross posting it here. My two cents on each of your areas: Optimization: I feel that a system that rewards character building optimization has a tendency to gt in the way of play. A certain amount of optimization is unavoidable but I...

    AD&D 1E Should 5e adopt 1e style arcane magic?

Nope, but standard rule from the DMG, if the players INT changed they could reroll for any spells they had failed. The DMG didn't specify, but we allowed rerolls for Int changes due to items. Ioun stones being a particular favorite of our MUs.

D&D 5E (2014) Something I would not like to see in 5e: The Tempest

And prohibit point blank shots. Honestly, a longbow is a terrible weapon indoors. It needs about 10 yards before the arrow is even flying straight. When I shot a 60lb. Longbow I was still heavily depressing my aim to hit 40 yard targets. A 60lb. would be a child's bow for the english yeomanry...

    Hex or grid?

Yep, offset squares for indoors is best. Know anyone who makes a vinyl mat with them? The book of dungeon delves has diagonal corridors in many of them since the dungeon tiles products support diagonals.

    Multiclassing: What I'm hoping for

This is likely to be a non-starter for the designers as well. They seem as adverse as you to messing with XP costs (at least for class progression). If something like the C&C class and a half were included it would have to be firmly in the optional module space. Its clearly outside any likely...

    Multiclassing: What I'm hoping for

I thought they were a little undertuned. In my campaign I allowed the players a free hybrid feat at creation and then they could take their heroic tier hybrid feat in addition. Overall, I thought the system was a very slick way to incorporate 1e style multiclassing and I really liked it. I...

D&D 5E (2014) Basic 5E: Weapons and Armor as style choice...

I think the best way to model heavy armor effects is through a long term encumbrance rule. Maybe even something like the disease condition track from 4e where skill/attack penalties accumulate over time rather than being static. But, honestly, that's more bookkeeping than I want to incorporate...

D&D 5E (2014) Basic 5E: Weapons and Armor as style choice...

See, this I just don't get. One of the most justified criticisms of 4e, IMO, was the level of diconnect from fiction in its mechanics. Having base damage based on class irregardless of equipment choices (or defenses) strikes as me as more of the same overly abstracted game system that will...

L&L: These are not the rules you're looking for

I think there is a pretty big gap between the 2e Thieves combat effectiveness and a non-combat specialist. I like that they are moving away from classes strictly balanced on combat effectiveness. What I was trying to get to in my last post, at some tables the campaign style is going to make a...
