L&L: These are not the rules you're looking for

There are a lot of very valid and usefull plot and literary techniques that work well in books and film that fail miserably in a cooperative game. Even if a player is comfortable being a detriment to the team when the knives come out, doesn't mean that the other players are going to want to...

The Ranger: to Spell or not to Spell

The 4e Warden is in many ways the spiritual successor to the 1e Ranger. I would keep the name Ranger because of its rich history in the game and then finish blending the two together. Let Ranger go back to being a Fighter sub-class with some druidic (primal) abilities. I would limit its...

Higher level characters ONLY fight orcs

D*** right. "No S*** there we were 10 against 1000. Was I scared? You bet I was scared. Those were 10 of the baddest MFers I every fought."

Higher level characters ONLY fight orcs

True. As I level up I want to fight bigger bands of orcs led by a few better leader types. First level we fight 3 to 5 orc grunts. 5th level we fight a dozen orcs led by a level 3 orc warrior. By level 10 we might face a 50 orc warband led by a level 8 war chief and several level 3 chieftans...

    Rule-of-Three: 03-27-12

I see your point. But, if the level scaling is going to flatten out as they've said elsewhere, then the ability to do 5d6 damage to a group of creatures isn't necessarily a sub-par option, especially if your fighter levels let you do that and take a melee attack in the same round. Too many...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

That does seem substantial for a 9th level PC. Do you remember the expected wealth for that level? But also see my last response to Elf Witch. Limiting spells through treasure mechanisms is fine with me too. I'm pretty agnostic as to the method as long as its clear to the players up front. I...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

OK, so you have no issue with a wizard knowing every spell, you just don't expect it to happen. Costs of spells and expected treasure are ways to limit spell availability which is all I expressed as a voted preference. I'm not real tied to any method of limiting. As I stated upthread, I prefer...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

An interesting point. It has been so long since I played 3.5 last that I don't remember what the expected cost was for say a 7th level spell or for that matter what the wealth per level guidlines were for a 15th level character. What percentage of expected treasure would the acquisition of a...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

Well, there is a seam available between knowing a small number per level like the 3.x sorceror and 30+ spells per level like the 3.x wizard. Expanding the number of spells knowable is equally within the DMs control. When it comes to managing the table conversation with my players, I would...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

I agree, how you limit spell selection should be largely a matter of player choice and dm collaboration. If a player wants to play a necromancer who only takes necromantic spells; well, more power to him for stick to a concept. On the other hand, if he wants to raise skeletons then teleport them...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

I would agree with this for Wizards as a whole, but not for every individual wizard. That's why I voted to limit spell selection. Any given wizard should be able to do 6 impossible things before breakfast; but it shouldn't be 6 of the 600 impossible things he knows how to do.

Can teens participate in game-store hosted RPGs?

My favorite local store owner would cut his own throat before he would turn away a potential long term customer. Teens and pre-teens are very much allowed in organized play with or without their parents.

    Paladins Should Not Cast Spells

I sort of agree in that the Paladin can be adequately archtyped with some non-spell divine powers (Lay on Hands, Turn Undead, forex.); but; I would honestly prefer that they would have the limited access to a limited set of spells that was part of the class for the majority of D&D's life.

Scaling: How many level 1 characters should it take to defeat a level 10 character?

This is why I want morale rules back in the game. I'm ok with a band of 12-18 1st level men-at-arms being able to take out a 10th level pc. But it should come at the cost of a massive body count. I think the odds of a small band of fighters continuing to stand in a fight where half or more of...

    Dear WotC: Be Blizzard

Well, Blizzard's only RPG was an unfinished, buggy mess that has had so many changes to the game system over the last seven years it is barely the same game, mechanically. I would prefer that WoTC not use that model.

Excising, Severely Limiting, or Strictly Organizing Feats

Then morph those starting feats into Theme abilities so there is some natural grouping of feats by concept. With that we can drop feats altogether and I will be one happy camper.

Vancian Spellcasting's Real Problem - CoDzilla

10% might be enough. If what Monte wrote at one point (in the DDXP chat?) that spell effectiveness will be tied to spell level rather than caster level than overall effectiveness of the lower level spells will be diminished. Add that diminishing effect to the reduction in total slots and you've...

The Pros and Cons of flat attack progression

With feats still part of DDNext, I'm not sure we need things like Combat Expertise to require a trade of BAB for Defense. If fighters have a stance or manuever type system (and it sounds like they do from the last rule of 3) then those old trading mechanics can be metered through stance...

Vancian Spellcasting's Real Problem - CoDzilla

You wouldn't have to take away low level slots, just stop giveing new ones, say once you can cast spells two levels higher. So when a Wizard hits 5th they get no new level 1 spell slots. Though, if we move all non-combat, utility spells to a ritual structure with a different limiting...

Vancian Spellcasting's Real Problem - CoDzilla

I was a big fan of the Dragonquest magic system. Spells were grouped into thematic "colleges" of magic and casters only had acces to one college. Every spell started at Rank 0 and you levelled them up individually through XP expenditure. The spell levelling process scaled up the spells range...
