How much culture should be hardcoded into races?

I think so. I would also include things like racial bonuses to certain types of saving throws like dwarven resistance to poison or elvish resistance to sleep/charm. They don't feel like a "nurture" type of ability to me.

    Rule of Three: 20/3/12

I think it makes sense to have unaligned as an explicit alignment. I've always followed the advice on alignment in the 1e DMG. Most humans and demi-humans (I included some humanoids) will not register on a Detect Alignment spell or the specialised versions. Only those characters who are...

How much culture should be hardcoded into races?

I think culture should be entirely tied to campaign settings rather than race. The player's core book (whatever it turns out to be) should have ties to the default setting as an aid to the new player and to casual players who don't care much about setting. Looks like FR is that default...

    Iconic D&D Clerics (Blog)

The last 2 editions did exactly that with Bards, Sorcerors, Swordmages, and Warlocks. There has always been a nebulous deviding line between the Fighter, the Ranger and the Barbarian. I don't want the core to be four base classes and its up to me to flavor them as I want. D&D is a class...

    Iconic D&D Clerics (Blog)

How about a Godi (should have a funny norse character) of Odin? Dedicated to his god and expected to lead his men into combat. Where do the old testament prohpets fit in? Moses may make more sense as a robe wearing caster but you could make a good argument that Joshua was both warrior and...

Idle Musings: Inverted Interrupts, Focus Fire, and Combat Flow

Sorry about my little tangent on focus fire. I played a lot of DragonQuest baclk in the day. For about 10 years between 1985 and 1995 it was my group's system of choice. I have very fond memories of DQs differencing of Close, Melee (engaged) and not Engaged. Though if I remember correctly, DQ...

    Make Race Matter

I would like to see baseline differences for race lessened from where they were in 4e. Along side of that I would like to see themes expand to fill some of the space that OP talks about. So, forex, there might be a generic "Mercenary" theme but also a "Dwarven Tunnel Fighter" theme and an "Elven...

Idle Musings: Inverted Interrupts, Focus Fire, and Combat Flow

Can't argue with that. In my experience a lot of D&D play settles into ruthless efficiency and wandering bands of homicidal tomb looters. Which is fine with me when I want a swords and sorcery feel in my game. Conan, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser were all pretty ruthless and homicidal. If I want...

Idle Musings: Inverted Interrupts, Focus Fire, and Combat Flow

I prefer the term "Triggered free action" myself. :) Without using a reactive action of some sort characters need some way to enforce the line. How about somethisng as simple as if two allies are within 10 feet of each other and opponent cannot move between them, a wall counts as an ally...

Idle Musings: Inverted Interrupts, Focus Fire, and Combat Flow

Scales down pretty well to small unit tactics as well. A fair amount of my 4 man fire team training covered concentration of fire at the squad level and smaller. And this is where the disconnect started. You are absolutely right about not ignoring competent foes running around the battlefield...

Idle Musings: Inverted Interrupts, Focus Fire, and Combat Flow

Most fights in my D&D experience are fights to the death so I'm not sure how much you can accelerate that arms race :) This makes sense, though I don't think its an effect of the current rules. Given an opportunity for 2 or 3 party members to hold off a greater number of opponents while the...

Idle Musings: Inverted Interrupts, Focus Fire, and Combat Flow

Ok, I sort of see this in a fight where there is 1 tougher opponent supported by weaker allies. Still, it's a natural reaction to want to take out the toughest guy on the battlefield as fast as possible and usually the fastest way possible is by concentrating fire. It's certainly metagamey in...

Why do you think focus fire needs disincentives?

Highest total bonus at level one to a d20 roll

10 for an average. Probably 8 for an easy. I would not require rolls for any attempt that didn't have a meaningful consequence for failure and where the attempt didn't have a constraint that implied a degree of risk. I know that's a little vague so maybe an example. Swimming a river with...

    1648 - Revised 7th Sea?

Very much this. Back in the mid-80's my gaming group became very "D&D is stupid". Our catch phrase (embarassing now) was "Gygax is a shoe salesman." In the pre-internet world, we were unaware that EGG was being forced out of TSR and that the additions we were seeing and hated (Dungeoneer's...

Highest total bonus at level one to a d20 roll

Without magic gear, I think it should be +4. +3 for abilities (I really want to see the ability bonuses scaled back down some) and +1 for training. I honestly don't understand why skill rank bonuses scale so differently from attack bonuses in 3e/4e.

    Critical Hits

I would prefer crits to reside in the optional, super-crunchy tactics module. I would rather they were not in the core combat rules. Since I probably will not use the optional, super-crunchy tactics module, I am indifferent to their final form. This edition I am all about removing fiddly...

    Heroes, Zeroes, and Kings

Mostly a response to, "Heck, I really don't see it in 1e/2e either". As far as whether Gary thought it belonged in the core; well, he's the one that decided to put it in the game in the first place. He may have changed his mind later, or more likely they had already started development on...
