No? There was a dead end? There are no mechanics in the example? If you want to put mechanics into this example it would perhaps be the players searching the dead end for secret doors without finding anything? I do not understand what you are getting at here?

It depends on the mindset of the players. While walking trough a labyrinth you typically only have 2-3 options in each crossing. A typical group will keep going trough the labyrinth as long as there is a new path - they will never consider going back trying one of the options they didn't pursue...

Covered in the last paragraph. It is not fail forward of the second flavor, as it is not fail forward. It is forced partial success. Treating it as a failure is not an option. D&D do not have success with complications, as the domain of introducing complications is solely on the DM. The only...

I think this sort of depends on what you mean by "getting on the same page". Say if we are expanding the upthread example where someone advertises "D&D Curse of Strahd 70% roleplay, 20% exploration 10% combat". I do not know if the game is going to be about: 1a) What separates monsters from...

This particular observation isn't so surprising. People tend to try to conform in a group of strangers. People tend to feel more comfortable pushing their personal views in a group of friends. This is basic group dynamics at play.

I think this is part of the communication problem that plagues this thread and keep it going, despite it having been pointed out multiple times. Fail forward has two flavors: fail with twist and succeed with complications. DW implements the first flavor, but not the second flavor. However the...

Well, give that PbtA is such a fuzzy term it could include almost anything I guess that just being PbtA in itself doesn't contradict this experience. What is PbtA? – lumpley games And as "Narrativistic game" is a non existent entity even in GNS theory before the entire GNS framework fell apart...

Ok, I think I now might have a way to express the concept I am getting at. For a given part of a game mechanic there are at least 3 things that can be interesting to look at: What the game claim the mechanic represents in the fiction, what the mechanics actually does and what functions the...

I am aware color is a component in big model. I don't intend to invoce that beast here. Rather think of my use of it like how my young daughters are first drawing the outline of their artwork before putting on color.

I am sorry, I do not see how this connects to my question? It seem like you try to explain why characters advance?

I answered more precisely in a different post. But for your extensive example here the analysis might be very simple, but I think can show a profound difference in language and mentality: Is the cook coming out a failure or a fail forward? Things that is completely natural to describe as a...

I agree. That is not contradicting my statement. Ok, I might have missed this. How do 4ed explain why an unskilled person tend to get into more trouble not directly related to their incompetency than someone more skilled? (which I think is a fair description of the use of the term in this...

My last answer got carried away into the details, and failed to see the big picture. I think now that the critical failure here is to miss the distinction between narrative scope and narrative content. Noone disputes that the outcome of a roll can and should affect narrative scope. For one...

I tried to preempt the BW point here: As for 4ed I didn't get the sense that meta-philosophical consistency was very high on their design agenda. So at this point I dont think anyone will be surprised if that is having some awkward parts..

The funny thing is I cannot help but feel like what you are describing is that the role you as a player have, as far as your character is concerned, is to simulate what they would be doing...

EDIT: I REALISE NOW THIS POST COMPLETELY MISSES THE BIG PICTURE. THIS IS GOING DEEP IN THE WEEDS OF THE FINER POINTS OF SCOPING. THAT IS NOT A RELEVANT TOPIC. NEW POST WITH APROPERIATE ANSWER: D&D General - [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting. I don't think it is about...

I think this more effectively explain the issue with your reasoning: I got a similar vibe from @Campbell 's exelent post a while back. The resolution lie in that in this style of play your wishes as a player should be surpresed compared to the motivations of the character. This is similar to...

Are you sure agency is the right term to use here? It at least seem used for very different purpose than common in RPG discourse, where typically power and agency is used somewhat interchangably. You might want to clarify how you intend the word to be understood. I do not think the Calvin ball...

I think this was one of several sources that inspired this line of thinking. I actually did not see that much push back? I think maybe the formulation about luck being a bit too vague for it to really catch on, so we can see. The main pushback I could see was from @pemerton regarding how this...

Let me try something new. In the games where these fail forward techniques are properly implemented (which exclude all variants of D&D with siblings), the "skills" do not represent the character's innate ability to do things. Rather it is a narrative marker that indicate how valuable the skill...
