D&D 5E (2014) WotC: Why Dark Sun Hasn't Been Revived

That's a cool list! Off the top of my head, the only games/settings I can think of that might scratch the same itch are The Electrum Archive (more of a Morrowind homage, but Morrowind was a Dark Sun homage, so w/e) and Ultraviolet Grasslands.

Yup, this is the one. It's on drivethrurpg now.

D&D 5E (2014) WotC: Why Dark Sun Hasn't Been Revived

I never got around to picking this up, but I'd also love to know. It seems like no-one has actually read this book.

D&D 5E (2014) WotC: Why Dark Sun Hasn't Been Revived

Count me among those who think this is for the best. I don't need to see my favourite D&D setting dug up and turned into a mindless revenant. Dark Sun is dead. Let a thousand weird planetary romance settings bloom.

    D&D General #Dungeon23

Time for the weekly update! Week 3: South Quarter & Imperial Tomb Risks and rewards. 15: Pottery Room A square room cluttered with pots and amphorae. A sort of stone ladder with carved hand-holds leads 10’ up to another level. (?) The larger urns are open and empty, except for a few copper...

D&D General Deep Thoughts on AI- The Rise of DM 9000

Interesting discussion. A couple of thoughts, which I'll try and tie back to RPGs: As a writer, what strikes me about AI-generated text is that it's full of cliches and unable to cope with details, except as 'themes'. It's all just sort of... Vague and anodyne. I was reading an example of an...

Not a Conspiracy Theory: Moving Toward Better Criticism in RPGs

re: solo play, there are a couple of things I'd like to point out about Ironsworn. #1 is that it is very much a game. Certain actions will trigger a move as in Apocalypse World, with a range of different possible outcomes. When all else fails, you can also ask the 'oracle'. #2 is that the...

    D&D General #Dungeon23

Time for my weekly update. So far, so good. We're still in the necropolis: the path bifurcates from the carved room into a labyrinth and a one-way door followed by a trap hall. Both paths lead down to the next section; neither is a pleasant path. I'd be twirling my moustache, if I had one. 8...

I wasn't sure where you were going with this at first, but your posts are starting to resemble a really interesting gazetteer for an island-hopping adventure. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Not a Conspiracy Theory: Moving Toward Better Criticism in RPGs

That page Snarf linked has a huge variety of links. Quality and topics are mixed, but there's some stuff worth getting into. I do feel compelled to point out that the page belongs to an ex-luminary of the Forge -- not because I wish to uphold Forge Thought, but because lots of people involved...

Not a Conspiracy Theory: Moving Toward Better Criticism in RPGs

TTRPGs have been around as long as videogames, though, and the people who play them are often the kind of people who love to dissect things. I really think it's a cultural problem: like there's a taboo about really discussing play in detail. People start feeling threatened. For better or worse...

Not a Conspiracy Theory: Moving Toward Better Criticism in RPGs

I mean, if I were to write a videogame review, I'd start with my experience of playing the game, and then address the technical aspects and other conditions that I think led to that experience. Same goes for film, music, etc. That's one way of going from the particular to the general. I suppose...

    D&D General Monster ENCyclopedia: Otyugh

One of my favourites. The otyugh is very 'old school D&D monster' to me, being equal parts goofy and sinister.

Not a Conspiracy Theory: Moving Toward Better Criticism in RPGs

Seems like a good reason to keep critique focused on actual play experience. I hinted at this in my previous post, but I think it bears repeating: this hobby badly needs a culture shift, from talking about games as books that we read, to talking about the personal experiences of playing games...

Not a Conspiracy Theory: Moving Toward Better Criticism in RPGs

I think it's possible to overstate this point. Video games, for example, have similar problems, which is why some people used to champion 'New Games Journalism'. Honestly, I think more emphasis on the experiential aspects of play is needed. How many RPG 'reviews' are even based on actual actual...

    D&D General #Dungeon23

Necropolis, Week 1: North Quarter Silent, dark. Events are fuel use, panic/disorientation, and wandering skeletons (they simply rise from tombs or peel themselves off the walls). Apparent trunk line leads past the pit, but the trap there may close the path. Alternate paths: down the pit, down...

Just caught up with the end of the month this morning, with so I can start next month properly. The blocker was some IRL disruptions which made it very difficult to get anything done, but now that things have settled down, I don't see any obstacles to doing one room every day. I was surprised...

Do you think this OGL fiasco will be good or bad for the RPG industry on the whole?

I can only speculate about the future of the industry. For any creator who has hitched their wagon to D&D, it's obviously a bad thing, at least in the short term. However, this whole fiasco has been really good for the hobby. Anecdotally, most of my main D&D group, and the people they play with...

A bit late to the party here, but I actually started on Jan 1. I haven't posted anything here, and have struggled to keep up due to life stuff, but now that things are a bit more stable, I want to be more consistent, and share some of my work now and then. I don't use a notebook, but I do have...
