D&D General The Player End Game Problem

Don't start talking to players and lowering yourself to their level now. Hold the line, king.

D&D General The Player End Game Problem

I suggest that this elven princess with more patience from an alternative universe shows up and kills this PC.

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

Speak for yourself - but for all the Forge waffle and talk of PBtA, this is a hugely entertaining read to me.

    D&D 5E (2014) Flying PCs

When there are flying race options in my campaigns, I don't really see too much of a problem with them. Generally, their inclusion in my games is for thematic reasons. (I don't usually do "kitchen sink" games.) I've never excluded a flying race simply because they can fly. Monsters with ranged...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you set DCs?

I'm not sure I think about it that deeply. I just do what the DMG says, which is that if you only every use 10, 15, or 20, then your game will work fine. So that's what I do. First I decide if the approach to the goal succeeds or fails outright. If I'm not sure and I can clearly see a meaningful...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you set DCs?

One thing I learned from tinkering with ICRPG is that granularity is not necessarily a good thing because differentiating between a 12 or a 13 DC is not really all that meaningful to the play experience. So this further reinforced to me that 10, 15, and 20 is fine as long as it's reasonably...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

@bloodtide So did this other DM ever email you back after you let them know what happened in the second session?

Introducing a new group to PF2 vs. 4E?

Putting in my recommendation for D&D 4e. If you can figure out the tools, it's just like the glory days of 2010. I ran a 5th-level D&D 4e game last Saturday in Eberron on Roll20. Three big set piece battles (Level +2 to +4), 2 Complexity 3 skill challenges, 2 Complexity 1 skill challenges...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you set DCs?

Unless it's a contest, I use 10, 15, or 20 as advised by the DMG. No reason to get more granular than that in my view. Setting the DC follows me deciding if the approach proposed by the player has an uncertain outcome and a meaningful consequence for failure.

D&D 5E (2014) Experiences Running or Playing Ship Combat?

I wrote up a whole island-hopping hex crawl campaign using the Saltmarsh rules. After the first ship-to-ship combat that happened in the first session, I completely threw out those rules. They were bad - really bad - at the table. Boring, left some folks without anything to do for periods of...

Oh, is this one of those things where you get an email, then you have to DM for seven groups or else you have bad luck? I hate when I get those.

    D&D 5E (2014) Enter the shadow demons

I've used them in a single-file maze-like ruin, magically enchanted to dampen all light sources to dim light (except for spells of 2nd-level or higher that produce light). They would attack at the front or back rank of the party then pass through the walls so they were untouchable, then repeat...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

Whatever happens after this turn of events should in my view follow at least somewhat logically, but should still be fun for everyone at the table and help contribute to the creation of an exciting, memorable tale. After all, that's how you "win" D&D. So whatever you decide on, make it fun...

D&D General The Problem with Individual Initiative

My take on the initiative rules is similar to what Churchill said about democracy - it's the wost form of initiative... except for all those other methods that have been tried from time to time.

D&D General How much control do DMs need?

I do whatever the game tells me to do, by and large, in this regard. In D&D, I'm good with players improvising details that make sense as it relates to their characters (e.g. "Those orcs right there are the ones that killed my parents!"), but that's the extent of it. If some other game gives the...

D&D General How would you use Carrion Crawlers meaningfully?

They are attracted by light, so when I use them, I have them snuff out light sources if they can - eating or smashing torches, light rocks, lanterns, whatever. If the game is a traditional dungeon where light sources are very valuable (and cumbersome, relatively speaking), this makes them pretty...

    D&D 5E (2014) What Don't You Like About Dungeons?

I think there's one like that in ToA. I don't go out of my way to put puzzles in my dungeons. I don't really care for them as a player and that means I won't inflict them on the people I'm DMing for either.
