    D&D 5E (2014) City of Arches-Perfect 5e Setting

What would you say the big differences in tone, mood, theme and gameplay between this and Planescape or even Ravnica are? I have both and wonder what sets this particular setting apart from those two?

    OSR BrOSR

Yeah this is definitely one of my biggest problems with the OSR and deciding whether to get more involved in the games and products that come out of it. Not only do I need to do much more thorough work to investigate who I am supporting with my money... It's the philosophy of many of the...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Well i'm definitely always looking to my leisure game of creative fun I play with friends and family to give me a well needed math lesson as part of the "fun"... its just not a real roleplaying game otherwise... 🙄

But 4e had essentials... so it did move and evolve to address your issues.

Again... IMO... your reason doesn't matter if the effect is to setup barriers for gatekeeping. Let's try a more extreme example... would you be ok with someone who preferred racially segregated pools because... it made their pool less crowded? Their intent isn't to setup a discriminatory system...

Thac0 by itself probably isn't but it's rarely if ever a question of a single mechanic being the lone point of contention around how the game should be... its Thac0, it's deterministic alignment, it's the unwillingness to admit or change old stereotypes, it's preferring the old artwork while...

This type of statement baffles me... there's a ton of innovation in the ttrpg sphere... D&D doesn't stifle anything and it brings more awareness to ttrpg's as a whole because of it's prominence, name recognition and it's scale of economics.

So you're all about inclusion and being cosmopolitan... except in D&D and all other rpg's as well as in modern society it makes you uncomfortable... what? That doesn't sound like being ok with inclusion or being cosmopolitan at all. So you tried to convince them to play the fame the way you...

When you've been constantly catered too for so long that you mistakenly view that as what is normal it's hard to accept that real inclusivity and diversity by necessity means you have to give some of that up so others can get their piece of the pie.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Or we read words and take them at face value vs. the handful of posters writing out page long explanations full of things he didn't actually post to justify their assumptuons.

The discussion had an assumption they were... again I'm not sure what your point is unless you're asking me a general question.

This that you posted is straightforward but it's not what Mearls posted or what was being discussed...

So then having the DM's actual goal be to defeat and foil the players... probably isn't a good thing.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Huh? What are you even talking about? We are specifically talking about adversarial DM's whose goal is to defeat and foil the players... given those parameters where does a presumption of good faith enter the equation? That they won't actually pursue their goal? If not well then we are talking...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

The distinction is the character you are portraying being roleplayed as adversarial vs. The DM actually being adversarial (Mearls stated the goal of the DM)...there's an enormous distinction there.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

But mechanics can't cover every corner case...within those gaps, thats where an adversarial DM can and will gain an upperhand. Edit: And all this is assuming the mechanics are perfectly neutral with no exploits.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

No disinterested mechanics aren't the same as active constraints which, along with disinterested mechanics are what you need for adversarial DM'ing to be viable. See there are things that will always be left out of thee rules since no ruleset can cover 100% of every case... however principles...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I think setting up challenges and running a combat as neutral referee is different from setting up challenges and running combat as a DM actively trying to foil and defeat players... I think it's why OSR philosophy heavily favors the referee approach. No adversarial DM involves the DM trying to...
