TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

While I agree with your conceit about 1e, we applied the same philosophy to 4e and 5e: lots of "...winging things or making up your own worlds, rules, or features like classes or monster." So I don't see the need to play 1e as we play 5e the same way!

I like a lot of this, but getting rid of the attack roll is a non starter for me. Not a big fan of Luck and Doom points either, but that ould likely be easy to ignore.

I am fine with 6e going back to 30 levels, but preferably not how 4e did it. 4e called them epic levels but they were nothing more then the previous level 20 stretched out to level 30. They didn't actually add anything, they just stretched it out. I would prefer levels 21-30 actually add...

While agree with you, some people seem to still want / like that style of play so I am willing to find a way to accommodate that style of play. Personally, we never played that way back when we played AD&D in the 80s. We just handwaved any resources - you just had what you needed. So I guess we...

My preference is to have a few interesting magic items than a mass of boring utility items. That is fine for Eberron, but not what I want in my typical D&D game. So I would rather greatly reduce the number of magic items to make this strategy viable. I think the core game should be designed with...

I would like to core rules to not overly worry about 1-1 balance too (though I know that will neve happen). I would like classes to be somewhat balanced, but certain classes should shine in different areas. Similarly, I don't think species should be balanced either.

While agree those are issues and ones I have concerns about too. In fact I had almost the exact same reaction you just listed when I first read it. However, what I love about it is the the story aspects of it. It is not a simply a broom that flies, it is a magic broom with a story. That is...

To clarify I wasn't talking about the effectiveness of the encounter builder or adventuring day calculator. I was just pointing out that the "rules" allow for a single climatic encounter. If that is not what you intended as "set piece" then I misunderstood your intent.

I was taking the definition from the context of the post I quoted. I could be wrong. I generally ascribe to your definition, but that is not how I understood it was being used in the comment I quoted.

But it is just a suggestion. You can, and I have, run much less than that. We typically have about 2-3 encounters per day and I have definitely challenged my party with a single encounter in an adventure day.

No, if you want to have "set piece encounter*" you would be expected to use the whole day's worth of XP. It is right there in the DMG: " If it has more deadly encounters, they can handle fewer." and "Add together the values of all party members to get a total for the party’s adventuring day...

That is not what I mean when I say it. I typically mean to make them interesting and not just +bonus to hit and damage or AC or a Save. Have you seen Mike Mearls magic item ideas for his 5e hack Odyssey? They are pretty close to what I want in magic items that are more magical. Magic Items in...

Here is the quote from the 2024 DMG: Are Magic Items Necessary? The D&D game assumes that magic items appear sporadically and that they are a boon unless an item bears a curse. Characters and monsters are built to face each other without the help of magic items, which means that having a magic...

I can't see who you responded too, so I don't know the specifics of the issue, but I agree the explicit intention was for 5e to work without magic items. I think they accomplished that and that it In fact works best without magic items, there is just not really any official support for that...

I have you seen Mike Mearls take on magic items for his 5e hack Odyssey? At first it didn't sit well with me, but I let it sit for a bit and I think it is a great idea. It, IMO, could lead to the coolest magic items in D&D from any edition.

That has nothing to do with what I asked: where does it say you must have 5 encounters per day. The correct answer, it seems to me, would have been something along that lines: I misspoke, it doesn't explicitly say that. I was inferring that from the suggested 6-8 medium to hard encounters per...
