If that's appealing to you, Runescape: Dragonwilds, Enshrouded and Return to Moria might be up your alley, if you haven't already checked them out.

Easy to assume this would be a D&D version of Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor, but that doesn't feel particularly D&D to me. The GaaS model really needs to die. Could have potential.

That sums up most of this thread.

I think that comes down to how granular one prefers to be, which in turn often comes down to simulation vs drama. That probably depends on how much of a heart of gold the rogue has, no? Though I imagine if this hypothetical was to play out at a real table, it's far more likely that the rogue...

Oh, I'm aware. The only thing particularly new about BitD's clocks is that they're a unified graphical representation of things GMs have been doing for decades. That spindown die counting down the rounds until reinforcements arrive - clock. Those hatchmarks on a piece of scrap paper tracking...

I am not well-acquainted with Burning Wheel; is "intent and task" different from "goal and approach"? In case clarity is needed: "goal and approach" is a suggestion for players to specify what they're trying to accomplish (goal) along with how they are going about it (approach).

Bolded for emphasis. This is a bit of a misconception regarding the original action role. Whilst common, it is not inherently intended to be conflict resolution. To quote the book: So, the action roll - and, by extension, Deep Cuts' threat roll - can range from task resolution to conflict...

Assuming the reason for trying to open the door was to save people from the fire, it's a logical causal effect. While it's true that their cause of death is the fire, the character's inability to open the door prevented them from being saved in time. This cause-and-effect is precisely why some...

It's literally not. While there are definitely GMs who are adopting clocks, as presented in BitD, into systems that don't use them (indeed, I've done it myself), they are not as widespread as you are making out. Rather than others living under a rock, you may be living in a TTRPG bubble.

I've not touched any of the Level Up stuff, but I'm assuming it's the same as what's in WOIN, in which case it's a knock-off of the Angry GM's time/tension pool. I imagine the Angry GM would be the first to call their self trad, but the mechanic is designed to add tension.

Best RPG to run a Firefly game

I haven't seen anything for Scum & Villainy specifically (but then I haven't actively looked), but Blades has a bunch: Sean Nittner, who was editor and playtester for BitD, has several supplements, including scores, here. A Couple of Drakes has several collections of scores here. Olin Kirkland...

D&D General Best D&D product of any edition (non-core book)

There are two standout books from 3.X era for me: 1. Manual of the Planes. Great for all your plane-hopping needs. 2. Sharn: City of Towers. Everything I want from a city book.

D&D 5E (2024) Any ideas for Avatar of Bane? Lvl 10 PCs?

Before BG3, I had in mind a campaign revolving around the Dead Three (which I've since scrapped because there's no way I'd be able to escape comparisons to BG3). Whilst I wasn't using avatars, I was using Chosen, and for Bane, my immediate thought was Oath of Conquest paladin. So I started with...

This is a bit of a rehash of a line of discussion that has already happened, so this feels like a bit of a misrepresentation. From what I've seen, it's more: A: It looks like this style has a problem, and nobody will tell me how it is handled! B: I handle it by XYZ, someone else may handle it...

I've always found I'm able to improvise far more readily when I've done some form of prep as a scaffolding, even if none of it got touched. That research seems to explain why.

There is no inherent conflict there. A "need" for prep is simply a matter of a GM's skill and comfortability with improvising. The conflict comes in execution and strict adherence to prep. As long as a GM is willing to deviate from it, including ignoring it outright, then there is no conflict.

Yeah, the only one really is spell slots for enchantment spells or buffs like guidance and enhance ability. Vampire allows for social conflict to damage Willpower, and The Witcher has a social combat subsystem so the non-combat characters can a similar crunch experience. In BitD, I'd have...

Sounds like you agree with me. Definitely sounds like you agree with me. You might be an outlier, because from what I've witnessed, there's a prevailing attitude in the PbtA community that it's not a generic system but a "game design philosophy". I'm also not so sure about them being any more...

Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades; Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate; Strange Tales of Songling

When I tried looking up what "Xuan Piu" could be, the translation of "mysterious woman" was basically all I could find, which seemed like a not-so-subtle nod at Jen being masked, but I wasn't sure if there was more to it, since I know Chinese has it's own cultural variant of wordplay (for lack...
