    Still Searching for "That" System

I would also totally agree with this. In my 8+ years of experience running it, Savage Worlds players quickly understand and naturally intuit their character's fictional positioning based on the rules / their character's in-fiction capabilities.

    Still Searching for "That" System

Hmmm, yeah, that's unfortunate. That's nearly exactly opposite of my group's experience. Our experience was tremendously fun and satisfying---satisfying enough that it got a player who in the past 20 years hadn't played anything but WoD and D&D 3.5 / PF1 to actually buy Edge of the Empire...

    Still Searching for "That" System

So you say Savage Worlds is too crunchy ... Would the FFG narrative dice system be too much? Because my group LOVED FFG Star Wars, even going so far as to convert the D&D 3.5 holdover player. The core system + character build options are straight-down-the-line rules medium, while still fun to...

    Old Gods of Appalachia

I spent a couple of years in and around Knoxville, Tennessee a while back, including Knox, Sullivan, and Johnson counties. I'm not a native, but grew to greatly appreciate the people and culture in the area. I have to say, I was looking forward to OGoA, but now seeing how deeply embedded it is...

What Hill Will You Die On?

Kind of. I've sort of reconciled myself to the idea that they probably need to exist in some fashion. Though I've discovered I like Genesys RPG's approach best, which is 2 separate markers for damage (wounds vs. stun), plus a critical hit chart. It seems like it would be slow and futzy to...

What Hill Will You Die On?

I've been thinking for a couple of days now, and I can't come up with a "hill that I would die on" regarding my RPG hobby participation. About the closest I can come is, "The inability to see and recognize multiple sides/styles/modes of play as being valid damages the long term interests of...

    Unpopular opinions go here

Possibly another unpopular opinion --- having just moved to the Pacific Northwest in the past year, Seattle's overall food scene is MASSIVELY underwhelming if you're not into one of the various Asian cultural food traditions or seafood. I can't think of a single non-Asian restaurant I've eaten...

Yes of course, you rang? 😉 Have never owned a game console since the Atari 2600. Though I broke down and bought the kids a Switch a couple of years ago. First game console to inhabit the same dwelling as me since 1983. Though I will admit, I loved playing my uncle's Intellivision back in the...

How do YOU decide what to run?

    - The system has to be interesting enough mechanically that I, as GM, will want to commit to its resolution mechanics for many months. - The system ideally must openly declare the intent of play and then deliver on its intent. This determination would generally be based on reviews and reports...

What Hill Will You Die On?

Until I played Ironsworn in the summer of 2021, I probably would have died on that hill with you. Ironsworn vaporizes that notion more thoroughly than a Greater Disjoining Disintegration spell.

    Unpopular opinions go here

600+ hours - Stardew Valley 600+ hours - Nosgoth (this was that weird PvP spinoff in the Legacy of Kain universe that apparently a grand total of 10,000 people ever played . . . but I thought it was super fun) 500+ hours - Baldur's Gate 2 (it doesn't help that I must have restarted this game...

    Unpopular opinions go here

Agreed. I'm not saying you should make it a 10-hour a week hobby or anything, but I'll break out Ironsworn in solo mode for 2-3 hours once a quarter or so on a random Sunday afternoon. And I'd bet anyone on this forum that a similar 2-3 hours of solo Ironsworn is guaranteed to put a smile on...

    Illusionism: Where Do You Stand?

Like @Umbran above, my position on illusionism is that it's unavoidable. It is, as stated, literally impossible for a GM to place every possible known "thing" in its exact correct "frame of existence" in its exact "timeline of action". The very second a GM "extrapolates" something from...

    Why do RPGs have rules?

You've just described the absolute heart of play in my experiences with Ironsworn. Though the GM does ultimately hold final say, the overall attitude is exceptionally collaborative, with the intent of including other players' inclusions/suggestions in the broader picture, and that if at all...

    Why do RPGs have rules?

So the story now / narrativist play with which I am most familiar using Ironsworn, there is actually significant crossover between the improv / spontaneous authoring as you describe. There is a strong current of "instant discovery", or discovery in the moment, as fiction is authored through...

    Unpopular opinions go here

There's absolutely no reason D&D needs its core rules split across 3 books. The "core 3" paradigm could easily be compacted to the "core 1" with some decent editing and reduction of monsters and spells in the core. Especially since you're going to publish 4 or 5 new monster manuals and spell...
