D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

As long as they make an attack or take damage every round. And if they fail to do so, they gain exhaustion, a heavy penalty. Complex. If you use hold person, you can conceivably stop AND exhaust them. Tactical. Are they using finesse-able weapons? Rules knowledge. There is a lot more baked into...

D&D General D&D Red Box: Who Is The Warrior?

I've seen enough enough Elmore art to know that wasn't a woman, because I've seen how he paints women. As a kid, I was quite sure it was a man. However, looking back at it, and setting aside my familiarity with Elmore, there actually isn't a lot to indicate one way or another. To me, the fact...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

Spells in 5e are generally not complex. OTOH, a Mad Berserker Barbarian using frenzy is quite the beast, mechanically speaking.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

I think it's a big problem when people are complaining about the balance of martials versus casters, and arguing the Champion Fighter and Battlemaster fighter are somehow underpowered. I don't think it's possible to satisfy someone whose ideal Warlord is going to match a Cleric having their best...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

They replaced the whole bardic music system from 3e with a handful of class features in 5e. Why would the warlord get more than that? Fundamentally, 5e always aims for a simplified action economy. All that White Raven Tactics stuff is just very un-5e-like.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

I can see what you're saying, other than the fact, they do scale. From d8 to d10 to d12. And you get more of them. And wizards don't get a free 1st level spell slot any time they don't have one. Or the fact that fighters are not actually dependent on their maneuvers to keep doing what they do...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

I don't care about the "lazylord." It's not something I'm interested in seeing in the game. I'm saying for a vanilla warlord, what would they have that is not already represented by a Battlemaster Fighter with Inspiring Leader and team-friendly maneuvers?

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

You can already play a Battle Master Fighter with the Inspiring Leader feat. What's left? Honestly, I find the idea of a character whose main focus is to grant other people free movement and attacks pretty tedious. The whole concept is somewhat antithetical to the 5e core design, which is...

Is it fun to plan a heist?

Planning a heist is a meeting, and meetings are generally boring. Insofar as the plan makes sense, it's realistic, and insofar as it's realistic, real-life heist planning takes extensive casing, is really boring, and often hinges on waiting for a lucky opportunity.

D&D General So those of us who know later editions yet still play AD&D 2 - what are its draws?

I don't play currently, but I did voluntarily play a game back in 1994. I wasn't into D&D at that point in time, but then, as now, it was the most popular game, and the most available. Character creation is usually pretty simple. It's fun to comb through books to find cool options in a game that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Encounter Balance holds back 5E

Partly because brewing a healing potion isn't normally a DC you roll against during an adventure, so there is otherwise a risk of making it trivial. But mainly because brewing a healing potion requires knowledge of a formula and the skill to make it, and I would really like to hear your...

D&D 5E (2014) Why I think gold should have less uses in 5e, not more.

I think the quantity of wealth should be controlled. Yes, a dragon might have a bunch of money, but at that level and up, you should mostly be looking at magical treasures and truly priceless gemstones. It's sort of surreal to assume an ancient stone giant wizard must be some kind of billionaire...

DriveThruRPG quietly releases "legacy" URL for those who prefer the classic site look

There's a button to refuse to upgrade. But I assume that will only be there as long as it takes to refine the update.

    D&D 5E (2014) Encounter Balance holds back 5E

The biggest problem I have with restricting skill checks, second to simply breaking the RAW in a big way and upsetting the presumed balance, is that the DM places themselves in the position of stating who they think the PC. The classic one I hear is, "Well, would you let the Barbarian make an...

    D&D 5E (2014) Encounter Balance holds back 5E

So, anyway, the GM book says to vary encounter difficulty. Which most people ignore. But it's not really a problem with 5e so much as 5e DMs, and maybe some 5e module writers. Even with just +/-2 Challenge, which is pretty tame, you can have a wide variety of creatures, with a wide variety of...

Ken Burnside on how screwed Asmodee is

If I'm understanding correctly, the best hope for a lot of your favorite games is going to be that, at the other end of the tunnel, someone picks them up in a fire sale and puts them back on the market.

    Goodman Games Forums Closing.

It wasn't a forum I visited, but I tend to think of every dedicated forum that closes as something valuable lost. Yet maintaining a forum takes time and energy, which can be a distraction from publication.
