I like the spending gold idea to speed things up. This mirrors real world rich people getting things by spending gold. I'm still not a fan of bastions just being the player side and the DM should not interfere. My group lets me do anything I want to it though and sometimes things happen.

I was thinking of having the keep further into the Sword Mountains south of Phandalin where it could be more on the edge of civilization. Phandalin could be a resupply point or safe zone.

I was torn between magic items and spells, but chose spells. I could use some cool bad-guy spells from clerics of evil gods. I recall using the old powers and pantheons books for FR and limiting spells to certain gods. Gave them a flavor- much like 11 herbs and spices.

It was not that dark in the daytime, but at night it was darker than 3 feet up a bulls butt. Not even stars- and someone thought it was a good idea to have a troop movement cross country.

I recall the darkness of the Panama jungle. It took us 8 hours to travel 1 mile up and down and through the jungle avoiding the mud and thorns and rivers. We needed to hold onto the person in front of you to not get lost.
