If you are trying to shoehorn something into older editions, start with the kobolds who were more dog-folk until, what 4e days when the designers changed them. I do like the change into more dragon-folk, but I can keep the two separate like humans and halflings.

I would start with the low-level monsters and add a few mid level to start. Something like goblins, skeletons, ogres, and maybe something like a displacer beast.

I have only been going to the one local con and keep wanting to attend the other close one that is smaller and upcoming. This year was the first as a listed DM though. I had run a pick-up game when tables were overfilled a couple years ago.
