I think 5.5 and TotV check off different boxes- or at least, they check off the boxes in different ways.. I think TotV does it better (see: TotV's Weapon Options vs. 5.5e's Weapon Masteries, or TotV's spell changes vs. 5.5e's). So if someone liked 5.5's way of doing things, they might not...

I don't think it's about Accountants & Abbacus', it's probably about the GM having high priority on economy with regards to verisimilitude. One could have a high priority for verisimilitude but not place such an emphasis on economy etc.. i think it basically involves wearing blinders in regard...

I think it's the same as any other rule that the DM wants to change. They can, but players have assumptions because the base prices are in the core book. Regarding how much money there is, they can change that, but they're again disregarding the base rules (in this case, amount of treasure...

13th Age has the Chaos Mage, which is very much this. I loved it, I liked being handed random tools and having to made do with them what I could.. BUT that's not for everyone.
