D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

So far the only "yes" has been with the asterisk of it being a magic lantern 😆 Well that makes me feel a bit better with my decision. I do wonder where the idea originated... Was it considered in earlier editions? I can't recall.

Level Up (A5E) Additional Eldritch Invocations for Pact of the Chain Warlocks

The imp makes an incredible scout, and it's expendable, and heck your familiar can even serve as a concentration-bot with a ring of spell storing for haste and bless. I don't personally think it's a "combat pet," but I suppose some folk might see the familiar at early levels' efficacy and wonder...

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

Casters don't have d4 hit die anymore, though. That gap closed a bit when wizards etc were upped to a d6.

D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

Lol yeah, the lantern shield was "real" and no one has any real idea of its practical purpose afaik, because it looks like something you'd get from a knife shop in a mall :'D I think it just goes to show that everyone gets crazy ideas now and again, and the results might not be ... useful.

D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

I think this is where the idea came from, at least for my groups.

D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

OK so I've tussled with this a bit as a GM, I've gone back and forth... lanterns: Wear them on your belt, yes or no? Is it RAW (assume 5e or 5e-derivative such as A5E or ToV)? Is there anything supporting or denying it? Is it stupid and dangerous so no, it's not an option (because you'd have to...

D&D General What I learn from DM 600 sessions of Adventure League

Ugh. One of the few times that I regret not fudging dice was with a first-time player, we spent an hour making his lvl1 dragonborn sorcerer, he got crit insta-dead in the first round of the first encounter by the two goblins at the start of Phandelver. On the other hand, as a seasoned DM, if my...

D&D General Hasbro enters gambling deal using Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property

I basically never gamble at casinos, etc. Twice I have, ever, because that's where bachelor parties were... I will say that I played on machines that I liked the intellectual property of- one was Lord of the Rings, and another was.. was it Star Trek? That'd be ironic. I don't know if my $5 was...

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

The latter part :) And I wasn't deriding it, it's just looking at design from, like I said, more of a gameist perspective as opposed to simulationist. But you're in good company, that's how 5e's been headed since the late 2010's. I'm not sure where I fall on that gameist-simulationist curve...

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

Sounds like a 4e solution. Not that that's bad, 5e has gone in a distinctly more gameist direction over its development cycle, which heads more in the 4e direction.

D&D General My experience with paid D&D tools after 3+ years as a DM/Player

Yeah "modern" DnD, 3e and afterwards, has a lot more to keep track of. I play OSE with a group still, that we play purely Theater of the Mind no problem... but modern DnD has a lot of moving bits and pieces.

D&D General My experience with paid D&D tools after 3+ years as a DM/Player

Ha well, my hurdle was just understanding how all the different notes + links worked together, were set up etc. That's why I mentioned wanting a campaign to reverse-engineer, just having a little generic skeleton of a thing with all examples of linkings etc; that's how I learn best...

D&D General My experience with paid D&D tools after 3+ years as a DM/Player

I think this depends on a lot of factors.. what the GM likes, what the players like, what game you're playing, etc. Call of Cthulhu is distinctly a non-battlemap game. DnD can play sans battlemap just fine if the battles don't have too many enemies/moving pieces, but it can benefit from one. A...

Yes, re: Archivist AI. It seemed to remove chitchat well enough.

How many "steps" is too many?

To be clear, you're saying that cover is neeldess/onerous and is usually ignored? It comes up very frequently in my games- all the time, in fact, if you're a frequent ranged attacker. I have, however, heard the same thing about height and falling damage, that taking features that...

D&D General My experience with paid D&D tools after 3+ years as a DM/Player

I have a few players that turn off the music entirely, and a few that request it- there's no middleground, it seems. I mainly have it for me... mostly nostalgic stuff, like Baldurs Gate 1+2 music for combats and Icewind Dale music for exploration etc etc.
