A positive fun fact I learned today while reading up on Gygax that I didn't know: There was a little girl named Natasha that wrote Gary letters in crayon. In one, I guess she asked for a spell that made people laugh, so he made one for her and named it after her: Tasha's Hideous Laughter. :LOL:

Has anyone who knew Gary personally come forward and supported this foreword? So far, I've only seen violent opposition. Any proof to the contrary would go a long way in swaying my opinion.

@Hussar Yes, I'm the one who posted it... Personally, I don't think anything written in the foreword accurately reflects Gygax or his intentions accurately at all. Further, I haven't seen anyone who had worked for him or gamed with him back any of these statements up.

Again, that statement was made sarcastically and in no way reflects how he treated women in real life. I've seen countless positive examples of Gygax's actual behavior towards women, so far zero negative ones.

The foreword stating he was a misogynist is what I'm pushing back on, which it looks like we both agree on. If it stated your entire first sentence I wouldn't even have taken issue.

I'm glad they issued the apology, but kind of wished they shared their reasoning for being nasty in the first place. I'm just so confused how they could take WotC's hard work that was given to the community for free, then badmouth that same company as they resell their tweaked version of it...

How has Dragonslayer been going? Picked up the PDF and love it, but am worried about the lower "to-hit" chances. Is it really offset by using correct tactics?

Oh, neat! It's not really a stretch to think he might have had Tiamat in mind even if it wasn't written down, but that was still a fun read.

Also, regarding: A more charitable interpretation could be he was cognizant of how that was going to be taken by Women's Lib, but since it was based on Tiamat, a female dragon, he was sticking with it.

Right, I didn't mean to speak for her in any way. Just one of many of my own observations of his conduct. How he actually was is more important to me than how others think he was. Especially when the main body of evidence is a single quote made sarcastically and hyperbolically.

Understood. I've been following the Trolls for years now and know them well enough to know their character, so their disappointment in how Gygax was portrayed in the foreword carries more weight with me peraonlly.

They responded to Musk's Tweet with: Hope that clears up the confusion.

To be clear, I'm specifically calling out the part in the foreword that states Gygax was a misogynist. If it was worded anything like you have here there would be less issue, for sure. Were are you getting this? I've brought up Kelsey's positive experiences of gaming with TSR alumni, Gygax...

I think the Trolls specifically posting in support of Musk's statement, citing their 8 years of experience working with Gygax for credibility, a clear endorsement of "he wasn't misogynistic", right?

Absolutely. Also agree. If the foreword wrote something to that effect I think there would be less of an issue. You know, like, "Despite Gygax championing women in the gaming industry, there were many insensitive missteps in his work that could be seen today as misogynistic, such as... ".
