What are you reading in 2024?

I don't usually read two books at one time, but I occasionally make an exception if one's fiction and one's non-fiction. That's where I am right now: still reading The Shattered World (and enjoying it the second time through, but it's mostly my bedtime reading), but I also started another book...

D&D 3.x Critique Sought For Subterranean Creatures

I think the HD/hp are off: with a 16 Con (+3 bonus), it should be 7d8+21 (52 hp), no? (If I'm doing my hp calculation correctly.) Also, is its name "ember sprite" or "ember sprite gas bag"? You use the latter in the descriptions of its supernatural attacks. I think I'd change "Immunity to...

What are you reading in 2024?

I started The Shattered World by Michael Reeves, a really good fantasy novel I read in high school and really enjoyed. I'm only rereading it now because I received not only it but its sequel, The Burning Realm, which I haven't read yet and am eagerly wanting to do so - but I figured I'd...

What was the best trick or special you ever encountered?

I had the PCs chase a nosferatu (a type of vampire, who didn't cast reflections in mirrors) into a pitch-black room where they could hear the sounds of a blazing fireplace. Naturally, they cast a dispel magic on the darkness spell in the room so they could see their foe...which allowed them to...

Actually, I'm fairly convinced Santa Claus is a Time Lord... (OT) Santa Claus is a Time Lord Johnathan

    Christmas swag!

My son got me the D&D 3.5 book, Complete Arcane. Comes in handy, too, as he's planning on running a 3.5 wu jen in my next campaign, which should likely start this summer. Johnathan

ZERO DAY | Official Teaser | Netflix

To me, Zero Day is the third book in a trilogy by Ezekiel Boone (the other two being The Hatching and Skitter) about a spider apocalypse. I was a little bummed to find the show has nothing to do with that series. Oh well. Johnathan

D&D 3.x Critique Sought For Subterranean Creatures

That's just for the HD. Here's the 3.5 SRD link; I've found it very useful in the past. (It's the magical beast entry; delete everything after the "srd" if you want the main page.) https://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#magicalBeastType Johnathan

D&D 3.x Critique Sought For Subterranean Creatures

Magical beasts have good Fort and Ref saves, so a 3-HD magical beast and 17 Dex would have Ref +6, wouldn't it? Johnathan

D&D 3.x Critique Sought For Subterranean Creatures

First thoughts: chaotic good? Really? And does it really advance by character class? I think these might have been carry-overs from a copy-and-paste. I think the Will save should be +1 for a 3-HD magical beast with a 10 Wisdom. Johnathan

    Show Us Your Geeky Art

I bought a copy of the cover art of the following two books - just the pictures, none of the trade dress - from the artist, Brent Chumley, at a Gen Con many years ago. They're hanging in my man-cave, where we run our gaming sessions. Johnathan

What are you reading in 2024?

I just spent the last hour or so reading the first three issues of three homemade comic book titles I wrote and drew back in March - August 1979, that I unearthed in a folder in a drawer in my gaming library. That would have been the end of my first year in high school and the summer before I...

D&D 3.x Critique Sought For Subterranean Creatures

Wouldn't grapple be -11? (+1 BAB, -8 size, -4 Strength) With a -4 Strength penalty, I think those damage ranges for its sling attacks would be 1d2-4 (which means 1, effectively). I think it should have Ref +6 and Will +5. However, reading through the whole thread, it looks like it started...
