I have played a pirate a couple times though not in a pirate campaign.

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

Role playing does not have to mean playing someone else’s created role or their idea of the role. Playing your idea of a role you choose is still roleplaying.

What are you reading in 2025?

Lieber is huge for D&D too. Greyhawk is a D&D version of Lankhmar, down to powerful thieves and assassins’ guilds being politically important. The Gray Mouser is a big influence on Gygax’s thieves with swords, sling usage, backstabbing, and even scroll usage with mishaps and backfiring.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

If you can find a 1e reference to it I would be interested. I don’t remember such a limitation.

D&D 5E (2014) Best third party campaign books - recommend me some

I have the PDFs from when they were on drive thru. I think the new company is called something like Quimbleys and they still sell them on their own site. Mostly they focus on the board game stuff now though. Edit looks like the relationship fell through this year and the quimbley site is down.

Tell Us About Your Pirate Campaign(s)

I played in a Savage Tide pbp game here, it was fun. 3.5 high fantasy pirates and demons.

Tell Us About Your Pirate Campaign(s)

I ran a Death in Freeport pbp game here with a big pirates theme. It was a heavily house ruled 3.5 with some of the house rules to make 3e more swashbucklerry and less plate armor tanky in incentives. The one I remember most was giving everybody their reflex saves as adding on to their dex bonus...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I haven't checked but I would expect they are rarer on the random item generation charts as well being on one of the multiple 1e miscellaneous item subtables compared with the single rings table. Plus they were not in B/X like rings of protection +1 were so no Keep on the Borderlands early...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

"Armor class below 10 is not possible except through cursed items. Armor class above 2 is easily possible due to magical bonuses and dexterity bonuses. To determine a “to hit” number not on the charts, project upwards by 1’s (5% increments), repeating 20 six times before continuing with 21 (Cf...

D&D 5E (2014) Best third party campaign books - recommend me some

For Freeport, there is only the Death in Freeport conversion for 5e, but if all you want is the story ideas and D&D beats the Pathfinder 1e Return to Freeport and the 3.5 Black Sails and the Trilogy follow up 3.0 Hell in Freeport and 3.5 Crisis in Freeport provide a bunch more. Hell and Crisis...

D&D 5E (2014) Best third party campaign books - recommend me some

Northlands Saga stuff from Frog God appeals to me the most of their 5e stuff, though they have not converted the entire saga yet that they have in Swords & Wizardry and Pathfinder 1e. If you like the darkness of the Ghoul Empire one you might also like The Blight from Frog God. For more dark...

D&D 5E (2014) Best third party campaign books - recommend me some

I like the 5e Cthulhu D&D adventure paths that were originally put out by Petersen Games. They have four part ones that are themed around Mi-Go, Yig, Tsathogua, Ghouls, and Hastur (and I think an all in one single big one about Dopplegangers/possibly Shoggoths?). Dark World is the Mi Go one and...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I am not aware of any such explicit limitation. I can find the reverse on page 79 at the beginning of the attack charts "Armor class below 10 is not possible except through cursed items. Armor class above 2 is easily possible due to magical bonuses and dexterity bonuses. To determine a “to...

I had forgotten those were a thing, another potential +5 of AC and save bonuses (just does not stack with armor and shields)

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

My understanding of 4e dragons was that individuals varied, but Chromatics were still evil and metallics generally were not, though they shifted to more unaligned instead of baseline good. Here is the text in the 4e MMI: Dragons are diverse creatures, appearing in at least twenty-five...

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

It has varied hugely over time, edition, and setting. 1e had Lankhmar with spellcasting clerics as White Wizards, not connected to gods. 1e Dragonlance had normal clerics with setting flavor rarity, then in 1e Dragonlance Adventures the 1e specialty priests for each god with themed reduced...

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

Eberron decouples dragon color from alignment. Golds and reds (in Eberron) are equally likely to be evil or good. In d20 Modern the different color dragons are there but they all have the same basic stat block by age category, whites are as big and powerful as reds. They just differ by breath...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

The top end bracers of defense that stack with rings of protection because they are not magical armor are the key part of that. Without the bracers the most you could get for the armor aspect from the 1e DMG would be leather +1 which means no ring or ring and nonmagical leather armor. Max...
