D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

Another pact magic model is something like the 3.5 binder from Tome of Magic who makes a daily pact from a variety of vestiges for powers for a day. Mechanically you make a check for the pact to see if you are in complete control or whether the vestige has influence on you. The various vestiges...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

So to get back to the fighter, the ranged weapons thing is pretty striking. Sling is not on the 1e PH cleric weapons list table although the class description only prohibits edged or pointed weapons. In B/X it is explicitly called out as allowed as a non-cutting edge weapon and in 2e they are...

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

Apollo, Poseidon, and the other top tier Olympians explicitly did not create the world, they just currently rule it from Mount Olympus. Grandma/Great-Grandma Gaia predates them. :)

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

In B/X Basic it is clear for the xp maximum: "MAXIMUM XP: A character should never be given enough XP in a single adventure to advance more than one level of experience. For example, if a beginning (0 XP) 1st level fighter earns 5000 XP (a rare and outstanding achievement), he or she should...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I was never in a game where someone was able to level twice at one time, even when I played a human dual class character and was going from first level in my second class and was adventuring with higher level characters. For my experiences this was a theoretical limit on gaining xp but not an...

D&D General This Makes No Sense: Re-Examining the 1e Bard

You know that since this is 1e those are not the only applicable rules, you also have to look under the helm, the specific class descriptions in the PH, and places like the DMG sections on clerics. Perhaps others. :) The DMG changing alignment section. The separate DMG cleric section. DMG...

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

Just FYI the original 3.5 D&D warlock was narratively a fiendish bloodline sorcerer type with less spell mechanics and more hellfire powers than the spell focused magical dragon bloodline sorcerer. "Warlock: A supernatural character whose sinister powers are inborn abilities, not spells."...

D&D General This Makes No Sense: Re-Examining the 1e Bard

The bard’s problem here is the same as the CE thief or assassin who puts on the helmet and turns into a prohibited LG for their class. I forget if that turns them into a zero level character.

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I thought the max xp rule was you stopped at one xp lower than what you needed to go up two levels, not after you hit enough to level. I am away from my PDFs right now so I will check later.

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

Eh, barbarians, bards, fighters (meaning the magic subclasses) monks, rangers, rogues (magic subclasses), sorcerers, and wizards, etc. do not have any special ties or consequences to their magic powers. I don't see them as pointless classes to play. Any of them can, and that can be fun to play...

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

That's not atheism, the disbelief of gods, its kind of a version of maltheism/misotheism, the belief that gods exist but are bad.

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

Not really coincidentally funny, that was the point I was explicitly making. :) (Although most are not vague on the source of the power). Plenty of room for you or others to play warlocks who pacted to serve a patron if you want to play a PC who serves a patron.

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

With a response of intrusive involved patrons ordering the PC around are not inherent in the 5e warlock concept. Patrons demanding active service is one story option, not the only one. Besides the pacting with an indifferent Old One there are many other options as well. Pacts can be paid off...

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

I think the warlock is one of the better designed 5e classes, I think it would be great if the cleric and druid mechanics were more like the warlock than the wizard and sorcerer (less spells and more themed powers).

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

I see a patron relationship as a possible story hook, something a player and DM can make important if they want. I am not a fan of forcing it to be important if the player does not want that kind of story. I also feel a patron works better as a story element the smaller the party, the same as...

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

5e has had options in the default fiction since the 14 PH for having the patron be an arcane battery who is not even aware of your existence or who is completely indifferent to you. THE GREAT OLD ONE Your patron is a mysterious entity whose nature is utterly foreign to the fabric of reality. It...

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

Are you talking about sorcerers with deception, persuasion, and intimidate class skills, high SAD Charisma, and spells like charm person or enhance abilities? Or warlocks with high SAD Charisma, charm person and suggestion spells, and deception and intimidate class skills? :) Anybody can pick...

    OSR Do Shadows make noise?

There are also a ton of not-shadow monster shadow effects in D&D. Some of them have you or the target's shadow do various things or conjures up shadows from nothing. Plus to complicate talking about things there is the classic shadow monsters lines of spells that made real seeming monsters with...

    OSR Do Shadows make noise?

Shadows in D&D are weird and quite varied across editions. Basic, where undead explicitly make no noise, has them as not undead. OD&D has them as explicitly not undead as well. 4e puts them as shadow type and explicitly not undead too. AD&D-3e +5e has them as undead. OD&D has them as...
