    AD&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

"Unless I decide differently next game......". That was GYGAX....always reliably combative and unpredictable in his arguments.

Strangely all but one of those players over the years just rerolled in our games.

Critical Role Critical Role Season 4 DM says encounters will not be balanced.

I generally find overpowerd combat because players reached too far or DM wants to make a point are just as pointless and even more likely to that groups gaming desire permanently. Neither extreme fn, challenging or good for the game in any way.

    AD&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

The 1e feels like 3 game systems cobbled into one quickly.

    AD&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

Round segments and the way surprise worked made magic far less reliable and sneaky classes far more swingy. Some things just worked better in 1e. A surprise round where your party or the orc could get 3 full rounds of attacks on you could swing the battle for good or bad. Mage casting 9...

And then he put in the rule book it was all up to the DM what to use and what not to use. He also over the years contradicted himself many times. And there were other people that wrote those rules and weighed in. Home was just one of the voices, in spite of the internet mythology that says...

lol same. But to be fair the rules said all the rules were up to DM. So not using them was part of the rules.

D&D General Eberron - why don't you run it? [-]

true but modern movies tend to take what we got back then and then take it too far. Not a problem that is just associated to noir though. We get 20 minute chase scenes in action movies and drama so thick it just leaves all sanity and fun behind.

D&D General Eberron - why don't you run it? [-]

i think modern Noir tends to go so far over the edge that everything is predictably going to screw you and nobody is really going to win. I never return to any game like that. Just no fun. If you are talking 50's Noir where a good ending is at least possible and not everyone will screw you...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

linear means A then B then C. Sounds a lot like the old railroad track.

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

I guess we will just have to disagree. I ve always interpreted railroading as the tracks only go one way that can be coercive or no Coercive. Willing or unwilling. Else you say or I say is going to move this needle so I'm done.

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

as has been stated many times and to be clear I'm not a fan. Some people like the railroad. whether it be enter the dungeon door clear all the rooms or just do what the DM points them at. and that's ok. Some people like to get on a railroad and not think, just act till the game is over, some...

D&D General Eberron - why don't you run it? [-]

I probably wouldn't mind running or playing it but I over the years haven't been able to find a full table that wan't to play it. It just crosses some threshold from what most people want out of thier fantasy. Maybe it feels too advanced and modern not sure but I do know it just doesn't seem to...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

Which is why I specified older stories. The Greek gods or Norse Gods were very different in the various phases of their mythology.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

Oracles didn't repeat what the gods told them to repeat. The gods controlled the oracles because access to them was power and money. The oracles simply were able to pick up on bits and pieces of fate and rulers and other powerful people paid to get that information.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

in the older greek myths and in the norse myths they don't change them for gods either. In fact in both the older versions Zues and Odin were scared of them. Also the primal powers of the Universe like Night, Oceanus and others and in norse the king of the ocean and other gods where more...

It also assumes the diety doesnt have people for that stuff. I personally like the old 1ed way of it. 1 to 3rd are prayer books. Any cleric can memorize from prayer books. 4 to 7th lower level to higher level followers of the dirty , administrative Angels etc. 8th and 9th level the diety has...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

THats one interpretation. It could also be they are just Greek style really powerful beings who aside from their power aren't much different than the humans who worship them. No one size fits all answers on this one.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

Since it's an Internet thread and we are talking generalities it often goes both ways. It could be wrong to not talk to the GM and try to fix it first. It could also be right to simply go. The details matter. And discussions like this are at 100 miles up making many assumptions about what the...
