D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

I suggested this with @Celebrim earlier today, but I'll also try with you. Would you be willing to attempt to summarize your position on this debate over railroading in one sentence? if so and others try it too, it could help to crystallize the underlying differences among the opinions. You...

A 1.9% stock drop is awfully ephemeral and unlikely to be enough by itself to prompt a reversal. Stock prices fluctuate up and down by more than that for no apparent reason at all sometimes. I bet they were also seeing tangible financial losses due to things like Disney+ cancellations and...

Understood now. Got it. Wow, that barbarian is a stud. I mean...not every character is that barbarian, but I hear you.

Dude (sorry, assuming you're a dude but apologize if I'm wrong), you and I have grappled before. I don't wanna grapple about this one today. 😁 The wall has already been sufficiently covered with like nine coats of paint. I don't think I'm trying to recharacterize railroading because I don't...

Dear Mr./Ms. Fisherman, I refuse to take your delicious-looking bait today.

D&D General Hit Points are a great mechanic

Help me out -- how does it add an extra 4 points of damage per round for your barbarian? For a character with a single attack per round rolling one d12 for damage, it would only add an average of 6 points of damage 8.3% of the time (player rolls a 12 for damage, followed by a 6 on the 2nd d12...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

Seems like a reasonable compromise. If I believed we could reach consensus on a reasonable amount of a metacurrency to both satisfy my concerns as the DM and satisfy the people advocating for more constraints on the DM, I could agree with it...but I doubt we could. I bet that's where...

I completely disagree with this. The DM's ultimate authority in the context of D&D is a nonnegotiable for me. There is already a built-in mechanism for players who disagree with a DM -- walk away from the game.

Thank Odin for that change, too, because I REALLY like Alien: Earth. Please don't make me choose between my home and my favorite TV show.

That's the obvious argument against it -- a die with fewer sides sees the benefits more often. In my experience using it for years, that's been statistically true but functionally irrelevant. The mechanic adds so much to gameplay in literally every one of my sessions that the practical...

Can I chime in here and have the last word?? See if everyone would allow me to have the last word on this, then everyone else can feel like they aren't letting their ideological adversary have it. Yes, I'm brilliant, right? I know. You're welcome. 🙂

Agreed there. That's why I have always -- since the late-'80s -- incorporated a house rule to add the mathematical possibility of unlimited damage. For every damage die where max is rolled, roll the die again and add to the total. So a farmer wielding a 1d4 pitchfork who manages to hit a...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

@Celebrim IMO, the length of your replies is what's undermining the veracity of your opinions. No, that is not an attack. Others are doing it too. It's just crystal clear to me that folks are latching on to your context and missing your points. Where you made solid points most people would...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

It's a question of scale. At 1st level an MCU Asgardian plumber could survive in the vacuum of space indefinitely, lift dozens of tons, is immune to poison and disease, immune to most forms of damage, and has superhuman senses.... Asgardians have pets more powerful than a high-level AD&D Fighter. 😂

I would love to engage if you would summarize your premise in a single sentence. Present a single-sentence premise, and then I'll reply with my single-sentence premise, and we'll be able to far more easily see how close/far apart our positions really are. I think the wordiness on all sides...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

I know this is just a fun tangent, but the MCU's comic book Thor's entire body is a legendary magic item. 😂 At what level can a D&D Fighter without any magic items lift 100 tons?

It relates to DM railroading and how the rules allow it. First, about railroading, I would say who the heck cares? Why define it if it very rarely rises to the point of being a problem? This is like the two hundredth post about what railroading is, but there has yet to be a single one that...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

I like it! But I also think the Ranger is fine the way it is. As for overpowered damage gods, how about a 5e Paladin dumping spell slots into smites?
