I dunno.... Am I glad they added specific advice on talking about what people are comfortable with in the new DMG? Gotta be honest, not really. It's just more words to sift through. Frankly, some things about being a good player or a good DM rely on life lessons that only experience will...

Key point! "...just because I'd prefer Sue over Chuck it doesn't mean that Chuck is a bad DM." 🔥 There's so much mischaracterization and willful denial of other points of view in this thread. I'm getting the feeling this is far more about personal trauma than bad DMs.

I like it, but I would say that "being constructive" hasn't been the vibe of this tangent for quite some time now, and I think most of us know it. We're firmly in the "protecting fragile egos" stage.

    Thank you. I'll accept that.

No question, that happens sometimes. Inflated egos are EVERYWHERE, all around us, all the way around the table, outside the store and down the sidewalk. Ego is, I would contend, a problem here too. Self-importance is a problem all over the place. The number that was bandied about for quite some...

Ooh! What if they add a rule that says, "If you believe that 20% of players and DMs are bad, return this game"? Wait -- was it 20% or 25%?? I think it started at 25% with the poll but quickly fell to 20 in this discussion. Now I think it's down to 10%. Isn't that amazing!? We've already halved...

Trying to think of a different way to come at this, some new way to illustrate what I think it takes to be a good player or DM.... First, take your most well-worn D&D rulebook and grip it firmly by the spine (important). Next, throw it in the trash.... After that, be a good person. Be...

Agreed! Then the takeaway? It breaks the very spirit of the game to introduce DM-facing rules in D&D that compromise the DM's ability to house rule. Thank you for helping me see it so clearly. 😊

Um, yes? Isn't this like the tenth time one of us has said it?? It's a number pulled out of thin air. I do not agree with it. But here's another number for you.... I say 92% chance you'll question why we think 20% is too high again.

Interesting! You make a good point. Sure, add those house rules that restrict DM behavior, and we'll just house rule them away. POOF! Problem solved. 😂

Maybe I just don't think of things in those terms? Why the need to judge and label it? 🙃 When kids play flag football, do you think, "Wow, those kids are really bad"? When you go out to dinner one night and there's a live band (They're good...for a local band.) do you think, "Wow, they're...

Maybe. I guessed 2.5% are "bad" GMs, even though I don't think we even agree on what defines a bad GM. But I'm willing to accept that the actual number of certifiably "bad" GMs might be considerably higher than 2.5%. It's kind of a going nowhere thing to debate, though, because of the...

Ding ding ding!! 🛎️ Winner, winner, chicken dinner! 🐔🍗 I homebrew and house rule a ton, but none of the changes I make fundamentally change the way D&D has been meant to be played. That said, the game has always endorsed and encouraged homebrew, so the freedom is there to change anything about...

TGIF, everyone!! Hope you have a splendiferous day. We're blessed to have the luxury to gather here and discuss games, merriment and other frivolity. 😄🥳🍺🍷 Yes, many of us enjoy arguments (it's true). Many of us enjoy feeling "smart" too (<insert zinger here!>). It's a distraction from the...
