Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

    Was meant tongue in cheek.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

We already have that though. It was a game called Pool of Radiance. 😂

    Very well put!

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Oh, damn though. The Arduin Grimoire was so $&#%* fantastic. Those first three books changed my world at the time, opening my eyes to what an outside perspective could bring to D&D.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

    Ooh, ooh! -- I know this! It's 10...in Shadowdark!

Plus, what does that even mean for game so malleable? In the 1e DMG Gary says, "It is the spirit of the game, not the letter of the rules, which is important. Never hold to the letter written, nor allow some barracks room lawyer to force quotations from the rule book upon you..." I don't think...

Totally disagree, but I'm sure I'm biased.

I think you're pulling my leg here so I decline to take the bait.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

Same, I also started with the quickstart books and was actually resistant to paying for the core book for a while because everywhere I'd seen it it was shrink wrapped, and I didn't expect it to be necessary. Yeah, I was wrong there. It may not be officially necessary, but thank jeebus I took a...

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

As a random talking point, does anyone else think the Shadowdark core rulebook (the thick little hardcover one) is one of the richest, most practically useful TTRPG resources ever devised by man? Oh, the tables in that book... My goodness, what a glorious little tome.

How long before VTTs support TTRPGs with AI GMs?

These AIs can also be used to playtest and demo systems and mechanics. When I make little homebrew systems of my own, I use ChatGPT as a sanity check tool to make sure I haven't created something ridiculous.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

How about Shadowdark? Because I see it referred to as rules-lite, and I kinda think it isn't too crunchy. It's also basically a hybrid of a few different D&D versions with a handful of additional rules.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

I don't think it's fair to treat AD&D like it's in a vacuum though. I'm not the only person familiar with D&D. Most RPGers on Earth are, and when I've read through the rules for DH, I'm lost, but I could still play AD&D 35 years later because it's still, for the most part, D&D (adjustments made...

The paid premium plans seem to include more history/memory. In ChatGPT's case on their $20/month tier, you can stop and pick right back up exactly where you were months earlier. And what's more is it literally picks right back up as if not even a second has passed...unless you want it to. You...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

You have way more experience with a broader range of games than I do. I'm only familiar with a couple of the systems you listed. I just don't think of AD&D as crunchy based on the ubiquitous nature of the whole D&D d20 family at this point. I can't remember the last time I met someone who's...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

As soon as a rule check is required, or a roll, that would constitute an interruption in the flow of gameplay, wouldn't it? For a system that says, "GM uses best judgment to ask for an ability score roll with whatever CR or DC seems appropriate (easy, medium, hard, etc.)," that's quite easy to...

How long before VTTs support TTRPGs with AI GMs?

Fair enough, but I'll say that it has gotten a lot -- tons -- better over the past two years. Today's AIs are like a different species from the LLMs a couple years ago. In print, during casual conversations, I think they're indistinguishable from normal humans who also often deceive or speak...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

I actually agree. I was mostly trying to be diplomatic and avoid yet another battle.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

That sounds fair. I did truly ignore huge swaths of the older D&D version rules, but that kind of thing didn't elicit the same intense response that admitting to do that nowadays does. Now when someone says, "Oh, I just ignore that rule" in 5e or 2024 it feels like those scenes in movies when...
